Show SUSC track squad heads for Dixie meet With fingers crossed for good weather, the Southern Utah State College track and field squad will head for St. George this week. The Thunderbirds will compete com-pete Saturday in a five-way meet hosted by Dixie College. Also battling it out for honors will be Mesa (Colo.) College, Snow-College, Snow-College, College of Eastern Utah and host Dixie College. Poor weather conditions-both lor practice and competition-have competition-have hampered T-Bird performances per-formances so far. Friday SUSC hosted Snow College for a dual meet. The T-Birds won a lopsided 117-27 victory, but winds to miles per hour and near freezing temeratures resulted in sub pat-times pat-times and distances. The week before conditions were similar at a meet hosted by Weber State. Dan Iiedlund, who walked away with four first place ribbons rib-bons against Snow, should lead the T-Birds at St. George. Hecllund had firsts in the high hurdles (14. (15, wind aided), intermediate hurdles, long jump and triple jump. He also picked up fourth and fifth places Saturday against formidable opposition at the Southern Nevada Bicentennial Relays. The fourth came in the high hurdles and the fifth in long jump. Also placing in the Las Vegas meet were Allan Lewis in the high jump and Ieti Sagiao in the javelin. Weightman Carl Cochrane picked up first in both his events, the shot and discus, against Snow. He had his best distance of the year in the shot at Las Vegas, but failed to place. Only a selected squad competed com-peted at Las Vegas. "A little warm weather will do wonders for the marks of each squad member," Steve Lunl, track coach, said. "We still have several meets to prepare and improve for the conference meet May 20 at Gunnison, Colorado." |
