The conference meet will be held at the tough Tri-Cities course near American Fork this year. Westminster College will host the meet on May 12-13. The District Seven NAIA meet is scheduled May 4-5 at the College South Course in Albuquerque, N'.M. I Two old rivals will be challenging Southern Utah State again this season for area golf championships. The Thunderbirds are the defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champs, but Western State of Gunnison, Colorado, is expected to provide stiff competition this year. For the last three years the Thunderbirds Thun-derbirds and Mountaineers have been the ItMAC's two golf powers. Much the same situation exists in the NAIA District Seven chase. Southern Utah and Kastern New Mexico have been at the head of the field (Western State is not included in the NAIA district). "We have been representative, but we haven't placed too high in invitational meets so far this year." explains Brent Orchard. Sl'SC's golf coach. "Of course we have been competing against the likes of Arizona State University. University of Utah. Brighani Young University. and University of Nevada-Las Vegas." Currently the top four men on the squad are all from Cedar City. Included are Kim Thonip son. a junior: .lelf Carr, a senior; I.ayne Isoni. a junior, and Tom Higbee. a junior The fifth spot on the team is a toss-up among Larry LaFrentz. a sophomore from Cedar City. Koichi Cbiba, a senior from Japan; Don McCombs, a senior from Salinas, Calif.; and Talbot Nelson, a senior from Kanab In team play, live men make up a team, but only the top (our scores are counted each round of competition. "Western State beat us in one invitational meet this year, but if we can get some good weather, we should be the conference favorites." Orchard said I |
