"-"-N.iiiNll.rtai1ntiii,i.ii'm ii Hart sets record at annual Dixie Invitational meet Keenan Hart, outstanding distance runner for the Cedar High School Kedmen set a new-record new-record for the annual Dixie Invitation In-vitation Track meet held Saturday at St. George and pulled off a double win, as well. Hart aggressively challenged the record in the two mile event as he set an early pace that no one else in the meet could meet. He wound up by eclipsing the old record by more than 14 seconds setting a new meet record of 9 minutes 56 seconds flat. Hart bettered his own record in the meet. To add topping to that effort he also captured first place honors in the 880 yard run with a time of 2 minutes and 3 seconds. The Redmen finished second in the meet, behind the Dixie Flyers, but Coach Jack Bishop and his crew were the leading 2A club in first place finishes. The Flyers captured the team championship on team strength and the relays. They garnered 65 points. The Redmen had 57 points with Richfield right on their heels with 56 points. In addition to Hart's effort the Redmen also captured four other first places in the meet. Kim Neilson, despite a bad ankle won the high jump with a leap of six feet; Vance Matheson, who had problems on the hurdles and took a couple tumbles still came on to win the low hurdle event with a time of 22.3 seconds. Brent Lewis took first in the long jump with a leap of 19.9 feet and in second place in the event was Robert Shirts with 19.8 feet. Robert also captured a first place in the meet with toss of 169 feet in the javelin. Others who picked up valuable team points were Bryan Jackson who captured second in the 100 and fourth in the 220 yard dashes. His times were 10.3 and 24.3 seconds, respectively. Mark Leavitt added a fourth place in the pole vault at 10 feet six inches and Mike Adams was third in the shotput with a toss of 42.6 feet. The Medley relay team also captured a second place finish. Running 220 yard legs of the relay were Robert Morris and Fred Wright, the 440 was ran by Jeff Betenson and Joe Burns anchored the team with the 880. The Redmen were also involved in-volved in a meet at Southern Utah State College Wednesday with Millard, and Hurricane and Saturday the team will enter the "Boys Day" track and field meet hosted by Richfield. It is expected ex-pected that upwards of, 12 class 2A teams will be entered in this competition. Based on his record second two mile run and double victory at Dixie Keenan Hart was selected by the CHS coaches as the "Track and Fieldman of the Week." |
