Show Cedar defeats Dixie for Big League Crown Cedar City Big League baseball team is on its way to Tucson, Ariz, to participate par-ticipate in a three-state sectional tournament to be held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 1, 2, and 3. The Cedar City team won the right to advance to the sectional tournament by virtue of their defeat of Dixie in a best two of three series to determine the entrant from Utah. In Tucson Cedar City, the Utah champions, will meet the Colorado champions at 6 p.m. the Arizona champions drawing the first round bye. In second round action the winner between Utah and Colorado will meet the Arizona champions and the tournament will be ran on a true double elimination base with any team having to have dropped two games to be eliminated. Cedar Tournament The Utah championship was decided in Cedar City Friday and Saturday evening in a series of three games that saw Cedar take the best of Dixie in the tournament action that was extended to the full three games. In the opener Friday evening the Cedar crew, under the direction of Wayne Mifflin and Steve Hodson, looked like a real championship cham-pionship team. They belted out eight hits to score seven runs and picked up a 7-3 win. David Middleton was on the mound for Cedar and he hurled a four hitter, all singles. Dixie put three of those four hits together in the fourth inning to score all three of their runs and held a brief 3-2 lead. Out hit Dixie Cedar got their seven runs off eight hits given up by Brad Seegmiller. They picked up one run in the first inning. Robert Morris walked and came on to score on an error. It was the third that the Redmen got their second run as Morris started off getting on an error and came on to score on a double by Gary Jack. In the bottom of the fourth Cedar pushed in their third run to tie the score at 3-all. Rick Rollo started the inning with a walk, stole second base, moved to third on an error and scored on a wild pitch. Cedar regained the lead in the fifth frame with two runs on two hits. Tom Mace wak-walked, wak-walked, and moved to second on an error. Dale Corry doubled to score Mace and came on to score the second run on a pass ball. Two insurance runs were picked up in the sixth frame as Corry and Rollo walked. They moved to third and second on a passed ball and came on to score on a single by Matt Roseberg. Dixie Evens Series. Saturday, in a rain delayed game, Dixie came back strong to pick up a 9-1 victory over Cedar and "even the series at 1-all. Dixie rapped out 11 hits to score their nine runs and dominated the action. Cedar was held to three hits by Isom of Dixie, a product of Hurricane High School. The only Cedar run came in the fifth frame when Rosenberg got on on an error and came to score on a single by Gary Jack. Dixie got a run in the fourth on a single hit, added two runs in the fifth, had two in the sixth and belted Cedar for five hits and four runs in the top of the seventh. Kevin Robinson was the starter for Cedar and he gave way to Kary Laird in the sixth inning. in-ning. Third and Final Round The third and final game saw the Cedar crew down Dixie by a score of 9-5 in a game called after six innings of play owing to a national imposed 12 midnight curfew. Behind the pitching of Matt Rosenberg Cedar got out to an early lead and held it throughout, although Dixie made a charge with all five of their runs scored in the bottom of the fifth on a single hit. Cedar pushed in their first run of the game in the second with Tom Mace singling advancing and scoring on a pair of errors. In the third Cedar added a second run. Charlie Judd got on on an error was moved to third on a single by Curtis Peterson and scored on a balk by Pitcher Isom, who was on the mound for the second game for Dixie. In the fourth frame Cedar pushed in four runs on four hits. Mace started the inning with a walk, David Wright singled to score Mace and Wright came on to score on a single by Rick Rollo. Jack singled and both Rollo and Jack scored on a double by Charlie Judd. After Dixie had narrowed the margin to 6-5 with their five runs on one hit in the fifth Cedar came back with three more tallies in the top of the sixth. Judd got on on an error, was moved to third on a single by Peterson. Rosenberg walked and all three came on to score, two on a double by Mace. Rosenberg gave up only four hits in picking up the victory. Cedar had nine hits in the contest. Isom started, but was lifted in the fourth for Jolley. Outstanding defensive plays included a stop by Morris of Cedar going to his left at third, an on the ground catch of a high fly ball by Jack at second; a double play on a shoe string catch in center field by Rollo and two double plays from bunted pop fouls with runners run-ners going - all on the part of Cedar. |
