C' Sixteen year old Blair Bentley from Parowan and Reggie Heywood, Brian Head, were standouts in Monday's popular Deseret News Marathon, held each Pioneer Day in Salt Lake City. Heywood took first in the boys junior division, ages 13-16, 13-16, in the 26 mile run while Bentley, son of Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Bentley took second. The marathon began in the East Canyon of Salt Lake County running over three miles up to the top of Big Mountain and down Parleys Canyon into Little Mountain and down Emigration Canyon, following the trail used by the Mormon Pioneers as they entered the Salt Lake Valley. The last leg of the arguous journey passes "This is the Place" Monument down Foothill Boulevard and eventually to Salt Lake's Main Street. Bentley has trained for the marathon by running 6-9 miles a day, six days a week. He also moves sprinkler pipe and runs in between pipe lines to keep in shape. This year's marathon had 498 runners entered, the oldest being 63 and the youngest being seven. Olympic and NCAA runners were involved, the overall winner being a BYU student from Mexico. Overall Bentley finished about 60th place. This was his first marathon race, previously only running for 3'i miles in competition. Bentley averaged one mile in 7:02 minutes for 26 miles.
