Show West Zion captures District Tourney Cedar National was held in the top of the fifth but in the bottom of the frame back to back homers by Chance Parker and Wade Orton gave Tri-City the tieing and go ahead runs and before the frame was over they had picked up four runs on five hits and held the margin to advance in tournament play. For Cedar National they sent Craig Soderquist and K. C. Jones to the mound. Tri-City Tri-City hurled Whit Bunting and Scott Robertson in picking up the victory. Cedar American Cedar American faired a little better in the tournament tour-nament competition as they opened play against two-time two-time defending champions of the Dixie League. Cedar American bombed them out of the park with a 14-7 victory vic-tory that included three home runs for the American League club. The first homer came in the second inning with Todd Sellers belting a two run homer. In the fifth two homers were hit by the Cedar Club including a two run homer by Roger Hulet and one by Roger Higbee. Picking up the mound victory was John Paris who went the distance and allowed nine hits to the Dixie crew. Cedar pushed in eight of their 14 runs in the fifth inning on 11 hits. In second round action the Cedar American League ran into the buzz saw of West Zion and came out on the short side by a 12-6 score. West Zion went on to win the tournament. West Zion got out in front in the contest and the hard hitting Cedar American crew could never catch up. West Zion belted out five hits and picked up eight runs in the second inning. In the top of the fourth they added four runs on three hits to hold a 11-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth Cedar American picked up two hits, by Scott Gibson and Todd Sellers to score two runs and in the bottom of the sixth they got things out and moving as Danny Bulloch started the frame with a home run. They picked up three more hits, a double by Roger Hulet and singles by Paris and Robert Nakken to score four runs, but it was too little too late. Scott Gibson went the distance on the mound for Cedar American. For West Zion James Stanworth picked up the win with Ed LeBaron coming on in the sixth to win the game after Bulloch's home run. afternoon. Washington was pushed out of the championship bracket'' in their first game by Tri-City by a score of 6-2. They then defeated another Washington County entry, Enterprise, by coming from behind and winning 6-5 in two extra innings. They then defeated South Sevier 9-5 to get to the finals. For Dixie the route was a little easier. Defeated by Cedar American 14-7 in the opening round they came back to down Beaver 7-4, and Piute 11-2 to reach the consolation finals. In the end Dixie won out with a 13-2 win over Washington to take home the consolation honors. Dixie took the lead in the first inning of play and never relinquished it, although the game was called in the bottom of the 5th owing to rain. Cedar National Cedar American took it on the chin in their first game and was the only team limited to just one game in tournament action (That also by the luck of the draw.) Cedar National met Tri-City Tri-City in their opening game and were defeated 8-4, but not without their moments of grandeur. Neither team scored in the first inning of play and Cedar National took a lead in the contest in the second frame pushing in a run without benefit of a hit. In the third inning Cedar belted out two hits, by Chuck Embley and John Waggoner to push in three runs and at the end of three innings of play held a 4-0 lead. Tri-City never gave up, however and they came back with three runs on their own on three hits in the fourth frame to narrow the gap to 4-3. West Zion Little League knocked over perennial favorite Tri-City 5-2 to capture the District 1 Little League tournament staged this past week in Cedar City. The 17-team tournament pitted teams from throughout southern Utah and West Zion will now travel to Clearfield where they will tangle with Kearns for the state title and the right to advance to the Western Division finals to be staged in San Bernardino, Calif. For West Zion it is their first ever District Little League championship and the plucky "little" team did it in fine style with a series of outstanding games throughout the four-day tournament. West Zion opened the tournament with a 16 to 1 victory over Beaver. In the second round of play they took it to the Cedar American Little League by a score of 12 to 6 and in the semi finals defeated Parowan by a score of 13 to 1. The championship game, postponed from Saturday, owing to rain, was played Monday afternoon at the Cedar City Park and the West Zion crew continued their domination of the tournament with a 5-2 win over Tri-City had no easy task. By virture of the draw they were forced into an extra game in the 17-team affair. On Thesday of last week in a single game they were pitted against Washington and came up with a 6-2 victory. Wednesday Wed-nesday they challenged Cedar National and overcame over-came a 4-0 lead to defeat the Cedar team 8-4. In the quarter finals they took on and defeated East Millard by a score of 7-3 and demolished Richfield in the Semi-finals by a score of 13-7 to reach the championship game. Championship Game In the championship game the combined pitching of James Stansworth and Brent Ruesch gave up only seven hits to the Tri-City but used superb defense to stave off frequent Tri-City rallies. West Zion was the most constant fielding team in the tournament. In scoring the victory West Zion had only five hits, but took advantage of every Tri-City Tri-City mistake. Hurling for Tri-City in the finals were Wes Huntington and Scott Robertson. West Zion picked up a tally on one hit in the first inning of play but Tri-City came back in the top of the second to knot the score at 1-all. In the bottom of the second West Zion pushed in another run to take a lead that they never relinquished. They added a pair in the third and at the end of four were leading 4-1. In the fifth Tri-City picked up a second run on back to back singles but West Zion put icing on the cake in the bottom of the fifth with another run, without benefit of a hit, to score the 5-2 victory. This weekend West Zion will tangle with Kearns of Northern Utah for the State Title. Consolation Bracket The consolation championship cham-pionship resolved to a battle between Washington County Clubs. Dixie and Washington, defeated in the third round of action came through to play for the consolation title Saturday |
