Show Hatch Bill aids Servicemen The Senate this week, by a 60 to 30 vote, an amendment sponsored by Senator Ted Stevens (R-Alaska) and Senator Orrin G. Hatch. The Stevens-Hatch amendment preserved the commissary system at military establishments. Senator Hatch said after the vote, "This was an important amendment for the U. S. serviceman and his family. Had the amendment failed, our servicemen would have suffered a three to four percent cut in pay and some 60,000 junior enlisted families then might have been forced to seek assistance through food stamps." The Senator also ex pressed concern about the morale of military service people. More than a third of the military, force recently said commissary and exchange ex-change privileges were a major factor in their decision to make the military a career. |
