Show BLM develops Picnic Sites picnic sites. Objects of interest in-terest are numbered along-the along-the trail, with explanations in a leaflet which is provided at the trail beginning. By taking the V8-mile Silver Reef Lookout Trail, one may view the famous Silver Reef, the only known area in the United States where commercial deposits of silver ore have been found in a sandstone formation. From 1875 to 1885, heyday of lode mining operations at Silver Reef, nearly $8,000,000 worth of ore was removed from the area. Now the once booming town of Silver Reef is virtually abandoned, actively alive only in the imaginations of those who explore this beauty spot of Southern Utah. With increasing public recreational use of lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management, the bureau has developed several camping and picnicking pic-nicking sites in the state. Typical is Red Cliffs recreation site at the mouth of Quail Creek Canyon approximately ap-proximately 20 miles nor-, nor-, theast of St. George. The I access road exists from Interstate Highway 15 at Leeds, north of St. George, and winds past old abandoned aban-doned homesteads that "stir the imagination," the BLM said. Thirteen camping units and 18 picnic tables are scattered along sparkling Quail Creek, many of them located among the willows and cottonwoods that border the stream. Drinking water, restrooms and fireplaces are provided by BLM. The use fee is $2 per day per vehicle. The green of-the trees contrasts vividly with the surrounding red Navajo sandstone cliffs and sculptured rock formations. Past ages come into view as the geologic formations tell the formative history of the area. In the early morning and late afternoon the sunlight causes a special hue which makes the area come alive with spectacular color combinations that are a photographer's dream. Red Cliffs lies within transitional desert climatic zones with varied vegetation ranging from pinyon pine to different species of cactus, visible along V--mile Desert Nature Trail leading up the canyon from the camp and |
