Show Workers protected from earnings loss by Social Security Protection for workers and their families from loss of earnings due to serious illness or injury and prolonged disability dis-ability has been a part of the Social Security law since 1954. Since that tima there have been many important changes in the law. A recent amendment to the disability program is of particular par-ticular importance to the young worker and his family. Now any worker who becomes disabled before age 31 will not need as many work credits to qualify. To get disability benefits under the old law, a worker needed social .security credits for at least 5 out of the 10-year 10-year period before the disability dis-ability began. Thus, many young workers who became disabled simply had not had a chance to work long enough to qualify. Now, if a worker becomes disabled between 24 and 31, he needs to have worked under un-der social security for only half the time between age 21 and the time the disability began. be-gan. For example, a worker who became disabled at age 26 would only need 3 years of work. Young workers who are disabled dis-abled before age 24 now need only lVa years of work in the 3-year period prior to disability. disabil-ity. . Any young worker who becomes be-comes unable to work because of illness or injury should contact his Social Security office of-fice for possible benefits for himself and his dependents.
