Show Memorial banquet honoring John Wesley Powell at So. Utah State College Sunday A special memorial banquet in honor of John Wesley Powell will be held Sunday, June 15 at 7:30 p.m. in tho Southern Utah State College Cafeteria, it was announced by Wayne Kendall Hinton, history Instructor at SUSC. Centennial celebrations honoring hon-oring Powell, first man to sue cessfully run the Colorado River, are being held statewide. state-wide. Boat races and tho launching of the yearly Friendship Cruise down the Colorado River at Greenriver, May 24 and 25, marked the beginning of the centennial celebration. The Cedar City banquet is one of several events honoring Powell. A special symposium, "Utah and the West," is being held in Salt Lake City this sponsoring centennial events. President Royden C. Braith-waite Braith-waite will officiate at the Cedar Ce-dar City banquet. Mr. Hinton will pay tribute to Powell with a speech entitled "John Wesley Wes-ley Powell, 1869 Man of the Year." Interested persons may attend the banquet, price for I tickets is $2.50 per person. A tour of Southern Utah and 1 Northern Arizona will be conducted con-ducted June 16 through 20 under un-der the direction of Dr. David E. Miller, head of the Western History Center ot the U of U. North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Can-yon, Bryce Canyon, Rainbow I Bridge and Hole-in-the-Rock I as well as Lee's Ferry will be visited as well as a boat trip on Lake Powell. Thursday, June 19, Lake Powell will be . officially dedicated. V -ili J i-ys II ill 't: June 14 and 15 at Moab, a barbeque and White Water Kayak Races at Vernal June 21 as well as dedication of a memorial plaque to Powell at Split Mountain Gorge. In Vernal a Powell celebration will be held at Dinosaur National Na-tional Monument Juno 26 and a rodoo July 17 and 19. Special Spec-ial services will also be held at Roosevelt July 22 through 24.
