Show LETTERS TO THE EDITOR the fact that the multitude of tourists from California and Nevada spend many more thousands of dollars in Cedar City for groceries from Safeway Safe-way and Foodtown market (whose bakery is one of the best you will find anywhere). They also patronize your Dear Editor: As a former Utahn born in Salt Lake City, a former member mem-ber of the C.C.C. camps in Zion, Bryce and Cedar Breaks National Na-tional Monument and an intended in-tended future resident of Cedar Ce-dar City, I am inclined and feel impelled to state my observations ob-servations of your community commun-ity and newspaper. I have been a subscriber to your paper for the past four years, and each year when I re-subscribe, I wonder What for? It is my opinion that neither the citizens of Cedar City, the Chamber of Commerce or the Editor can see any farther than Red Mountain on your Eastern boundary (other than the Brian Head ski resort area). . As one case In point (and for me the most recent) this past May 3rd and 4th, I had the pleasure of visiting your city again. While there I went up to Navajo Lake and Duck Creek area on Saturday, May 3rd. During the afternoon after-noon I enjoyed the experience (at least to a Southern California!!) Calif-ornia!!) of a snowstorm in blizzard-like proportions that lasted for a considerable length of time. Yet in reading read-ing your paper dated May 8, no one would have known if the day had been sunny, cloudy, or have even been at all! I am well aware that neither Navajo Lake or Duck Creek and Lake are located in Iron County; yet there is no city, much less a county in Southern South-ern Utah that derives as much benefit from these two marvelous mar-velous attractions as does Cedar Ce-dar City. It is my personal knowledge that the operators of the lodge at Navajo Lake sell in excess of $10,000 worth of fishing licences li-cences each year which are nearly all non-resident. This helps to make it possible for your citizens to enjoy such excellent ex-cellent fishing (if they ever get beyond Red Mountain). They also spend several thousand thous-and dollars each year in Cedar City for lumber, gasoline, groceries gro-ceries and miscellaneous supplies sup-plies as well as purchasing a new automobile and truck from your local dealers. All of this certainly helps to add to the economy of your community. com-munity. Please give some thought to many fine merchants on Main Street as well as other services ser-vices offered in your business area. I would also appreciate better bet-ter fish and game coverage in your paper. On an average you have had a couple of items at the beginning of fishing season and that was all. By the way what has been the outcome of the dynamiting dy-namiting episode last year at Duck Lake? Seems like it was dropped like a hot potato. I would also like to see in your classified section, the a-mount a-mount asked by the seller for all developed and undeveloped undevelop-ed real estate as well as livestock, live-stock, used automobiles and misc. items. I know that the State Highway High-way Dept. maintains heavy road equipment at the turn-off turn-off to Cedar Breaks on Highway High-way 14. However, when I was there the road was closed to your excellent ski resort at Brian Head, forcing ski enthusiasts en-thusiasts a long detour through Parowan and Parowan Canyon. Why? Located in Cedar City is the Forest Service Headquarters as well as other State offices. Why should your citizens have to rely on occasional weather reports and road condition reports re-ports emanating occasionally from Parowan? Even then, about the most you get is the amount of water in a given snow-pack. Surely in a city of your size you must have some interested individuals and agencies that can keep your newspaper informed and up-to-date. Or have you? About a year ago, you published pub-lished a very good rotogravure supplement to your paper. But one thing I noted; you had a fine photo of Navajo Lake, only on-ly you didn't name it as such only referred to it as a near-by lake. Why? i Panguitch Lake is bally-hooed bally-hooed as one of the 10 best trout fishing lakes in the United Unit-ed States but day in and day out you can catch your limit of beautiful and delicious trout either at Navajo or Duck Creek as well as Mammoth j, and have ten times more won-1 J derful scenery to enjoy your- j self in while doing so. jj Sometims I feel like we so- called out-of-staters do more J promoting for you than you do yourselves. Why? 1$ I think that your local'; Chamber of Commerce could J get a little more on the ball, sj All of Cedar Mountain be- Ji lon.ds to G?dar City regardless J of what county it lies in. Let's J promote all of it! You have everything to gain and no- thing to lose. jj Now that the freeway is $ practically by-passing your city, let's give the tourists a few good reasons for stopping and p'-ase give us out-siders a reason to subscribe to your newspaper. In closing, permit me to tate that I do not consider mys-;lf a full-fledged out-sider as I am also a property own- er and tax payer in Iron Coun. ty. V.ery Truly Yours, s Eugene P. Davis |
