Show Parowan Hi Students In State-wide Mathematics Contest A group of Parowan High School students this region's strongest achievers in mathematics mathema-tics traveled to College of Southern Utah on Saturday, Mar. 6 to participate in a state-wide mathematics contest. The contest has been sponsored sponsor-ed e'ery year lor the past eight .'oars by the Junior Division of 'he Utah Academy of Sciences, Arts and letters. Mrs. Jean J. Pedersen, University of Utah Department De-partment of Mathematics is the state chairman for the contest. ny high school student in the State of Utah may participate. Last year there were almost 800 :articipants; this year the registration regis-tration exceeds 1,500. The examination is given on the campuses of the eight institutions insti-tutions of higher learning of the state. Students travel to the college col-lege nearest to their high school for the three-hour examination. Score sheets are sent lo the University Uni-versity of Utah Computer Center for grading. The purpose of the contest is to encourage the study of mathematics math-ematics among high school students stu-dents and to reward those students stu-dents who show outstanding ability and progress ln their studies. stu-dies. Prizes, Including gold, silver sil-ver and bronze pins and awards in the form of certificates, are made to the state-wide winners and to the winners in each region. re-gion. The universities and colleges col-leges participating in the contest con-test may also offer scholarships to contest winners. Each student vvho participates in the contest may receive a card signifying ''is participation, and he may also find cut his standing relative rela-tive to the other participants. The Parowan High student contestants con-testants are: Allan R. Orton, Harold D. Mitchell, Mahlon Dal-'cy, Dal-'cy, Eliott Hulet, Hal Wheatley. Clinton M. Bentley, Gary Jensen ind Greg Miller.
