Show Former Cedar Man Gains Award On Engineer Paper According to a ' report from Scottsdale, Ariz., Herschel Ha 11, son of Bishop and Mrs. Horace Hall of Cedar City, Ci-ty, and a reliability relia-bility control engineer en-gineer with Western Wes-tern Center's quality assurance assur-ance department in Scottsdale has 1 1 2 . i Herschel Hall been awarded a five-day ex-1 pense trip to New York City as a j guest of the Institute of Electrical Electri-cal and Electronic Engineers "Member-for-Life." I Last year, while attending the ' University of Utah. Herschel sub-1 mitted a paper, "A Study of Digl- j tal Computer System That Can: Learn" to Region six of the IEEE. 1 The paper described the purpose pur-pose and need for self-organizing systems (self-learning devices) de-vices) and details the theory and circuit operation of an electronic mouse that by learning from its experience can find the shortest route through a complex j maze. Electronically, the system consists of a control device and a memory device where the system's sys-tem's experience is stored in magnetic cores. The paper, Judged best by IEEE, IE-EE, Region Six, won Hall a trip to Phoenix where he presented the paper In sub- regional competition, compe-tition, then to Salt Lake City for the regional competition. 32 Uni versities were represented at this presentation and Hall's paper was judged best of the region. As a result of the regional competition, he has been awarded award-ed the five-day all-expense paid trip to the IEEE International Convention to be held at the New York Hilton Hotel on March 22-26. He has been with West- I em Center since June, 1964. |
