Braith-waite, Braith-waite, of the College of Southern Utah, it was announced that the Air Force ROTC Subdetachment 8(0-A at the College of Southern Utah will be fully discontinued at the end of the current school year. This action is in response to communications received from Secretary of the Air Force, Eugene Eu-gene M. Zuckert, and Brigadier General William C. Lindley, Commandant of the Air Force ROTC, requesting discontinuation discontinua-tion of the unit under a re-evaluation program of the entire armed arm-ed services. Beorgcmizational Program The general re-orientation of the ROTC program, as directed by the Department of Defense, emphasizes the training of officers offi-cers at the lowest reasonable cost to the government. The CSU detachment, de-tachment, along with other detachments de-tachments in the program throughout the country was run sidered to fall below the cost efficiency ef-ficiency rating as set up as a criteria for the continuation of the ROTC program, it was indicated. indi-cated. Commander of the AF ROTC unit at CSU, Major DeWitte C. Gordon further Indicated that the basic two-year program conducted conduct-ed at CSU does not fit into the I expansion plans now underway at college oi Southern Utah in its move into a four-year program. At the present time the college is not large enough to support a full four year ROTC program and under the current program those men who enter the basic program, pro-gram, would by necessity, have to transfer to another institution if they wished to continue rather than complete a four year scholastic scho-lastic course at CSU. Provided Services Dr. Braithwaite Indicated the fine cooperation of the program with the school during its existence exis-tence on the CSU Campus. He also indicated that he expected that when the college did grow sufficiently to conduct a full four year program, an application for such could, and he hoped would, be made. The CSU AF ROTC unit has been administered during inc. past four years by Major Gordon. Also assigned to the unit for tiie past tnree years has been Sgt. Fredrieh H. Esch. Both, according accord-ing to Dr. Braithwaite, have made noteworthy contributions to tne College and to the community as well. Major Gordon also commented on the unit that the quality of olficcr has been excellent but that the quantity was nut sum-clent sum-clent to justiiy continuance during the past five years. Established la 1949 The unit was established on the campus In tne ivtj-oo scnool year. Initially the program was mandatory for all male students. It reverted to a voluntary program pro-gram In 1957. Since that time the peak enrollment was in 1901 when 96 cadets were participating. participat-ing.
