Opera Carmen Production Dates Announced The colorful and exciting opera ! "Carmen," believed by most crl- j tics to be the most popular opera ' the world has ever known, will be presented in all of Its brll-1 liant orchestrations and drama-: tic power to audiences at thel I College of Southern Utah April j 4, 5, 6 and 7, under the direction of Prof. Roy L. Halversen and I Dr. Blaine Johnson. ! The tale of Don June's Ill-fated . love for the wild and captivat-I captivat-I ing gypsy Carmen is woven I around gay Spanish dances and in well-known melodies such as the Toreado Song, the Habanera and the Flower Song. Soldiers, smugglers, duels and a bull fight play an important part in this story of jealousy, hate and love. The nine principal roles are double cast with student voices and townspeople for the four performances. Chorus background back-ground will be sung by a 35- voice I college chorus and a 37-voice children's chorus of ages 7 to 12, according to Dr.. Johnson. There are some CO members of the orchestra or-chestra under the baton of Prof. Halversen. Beautiful costuming and stage settings will be in the long tradition tra-dition of musical excellence at the institution, according to the directors. |
