Show American Fork Downs CHS Redmen To Capture Class B Baseball Title After dominating the Class B; baseball ranks for the past two years with the state title the Cedar City Redmen were handed a defeat Wednesday afternoon at the hands of the American Fork Cavemen, to move the Redmen into second place honors. The Cavement downed the Redmen 5 to 1. In the past five years the Red-men Red-men have won three state Class B baseball titles, and in the other oth-er two, including the just concluded con-cluded 1961 season, they have played in the state playoffs. The Redmen drew first blood in the top half of the first inning in-ning when the leadoff man Glen Pryor scored. Pryor fcU to start the game, he was sacrificed to second with a bunt by Kent Smith and he moved around to score on an error. American Fork bounced right back and blasted four hits off Steve Cahoon in the bottom half of the first inning, scored three runs and they never relinquised the lead. Both teams were shutout in the second, third and fourth innings, in-nings, but the Cavemen added icing to the victory cake in the fifth with a single, followed by a double and an error to push in two more runs to take a 5 to 1 lead. Cedar missed a bet to get back in the game in the third inning of play when they loaded the bases on an error, a hit by Cahoon Ca-hoon and a walk with only one out. A strike out by the strong American Fork pitcher, Moore, and an infield out, however, eliminated the threat. Again in the fourth the Redmen placed two men on bases with only one away but failed to score. Only three hits were tallied by the Redmen. They were by Pryor, Cahoon, and Steve Judd. All were singles. American Fork collected eight hits Including three for doubles, two of those by the pitcher Moore. Cahoon failed to give up a walk in the game and he collected collect-ed a total of nine strikeouts. Moore gave up five walks and left five Redmen at the plate with strikeouts. The Redmen's failure to hit with men on proved to be their downfall in this state championship champ-ionship contest. Defensive star of the playoff was Smith of American Fork in centerfield. who came through with four briliant catches, two deep against the centerfield fence in the top half of the final inning of play to shut off the final threat of the Redmen. that he use the proposed trip to inspect scenic attractions along the Colorado River in Utah to trigger a comprehensive, cooperative cooper-ative study which would produce this master plan. The three have all accepted, contingent upon developments In Congress, the Secretary's invitation invita-tion to participate in this trip to be made in the coming summer. Senator Moss and Congressman Congress-man King said their trip last week with the Secretary to Rainbow Rain-bow Bridge left them "more convinced con-vinced than ever that southern Utah possesses a recreational and scenic potential which has no equal in the 50 states. "We have emphasized the need for comprehensive planning to the Secretary, and he has expressed ex-pressed favorable interest in it," they said. "With two more national parks already under personal consideration consider-ation exploring many more park developments, we must have a master plan to coordinate this ork," Congressman Peterson ob- served. |
