Show I Council Approves Sales Tax For City Purposes ! The Cedar City Council has taken steps to put the one-half cent sales tax, approved by the last legislature, into effect. A city ordinance has been adopted and a request made of the Iron County Commissioners to adopt a similar ordinance, which is expected ex-pected will be done this week. The new sales tax would go into effect on July 1 and would make it possible to reduce the city tax levy by three mills. The following year, however, the reduction re-duction could be greater, since the sales tax would be effective for the entire year. The council at its meeting Thursday approved the sale of $20,000 of municipal water bonds, and accepted bids of two firms for new police cars. The bid of Jones Motor Co. of $833.91 for a Plymouth Ply-mouth was accepted and the bid of Lunt Motor Co. of $719.10 for a Dodge was approved. Two other bids, from Thorley Motor and Bradshaw Chevrolet Co., were received. re-ceived. The resignation of Jim Urie as chairman of the Airport Committee Com-mittee was accepted, but no action ac-tion was taken on the appointment appoint-ment of a successor. The Council also made final decision to close down all facilities facil-ities at El Escalante Hotel including in-cluding the restaurant. Only rooms for a caretaker, will remain re-main in use after the end of the month. Permission was granted the City Fire Department to handle a fireworks display on Independence Independ-ence Day. Special apparel for cemetery employees to wear during dur-ing burial ceremonies was approved. |
