Show Cedar City Matron Succumbs After Long Illness Funeral services were conducted conduct-ed in the Cedar First Ward chapel cha-pel Saturday afternoon, June 7, for Sarah J. H. Smith, 86. Mrs. Smith succumbed Wednesday, June 4 of a lingering illness. Conducting the services was Bishop Clemont B. Adams. Prayer Pray-er at the mortuary was by Ed McMullin and the invocation at the services was by George A. Wood. Speakers included Leo Larson, and President Harold S. Snow of the St. George Temple. "That Beautiful Land," was sung by a quartet composed of Lois McConnell, Ray Cosslett, C. William Macfarlane and Mamie Eck. accompanied by Beth Leigh. Esther Jones and LaRae Gulh-ford Gulh-ford sang "In the Garden," accompanied ac-companied by Bernella Jones and the quartet also rendered the song "Lead Me Gently Home Father." Benediction was by I. E. Riddle Rid-dle and the prelude and postlude music was by Belle Jones. Dedication of the grave In the Cedar City cemetery was by George W. Smith and grandchildren grandchil-dren including David, Garth, Jay, Scott and Kimner Jenson and Warren Smith, were pall bearers. Mrs. Smith was born in Toq-uerville Toq-uerville on May 6, 1872, a daughter daugh-ter of La t relit Joseph and Ann Spendlove Hopkins. She married David A. Smith on Sept. 18, 1902 in the Mantl L D S Temple. The Smiths resided in Salt Lake City following their marriage mar-riage while Mr. Smith completed complet-ed his schooling at the University Universi-ty of Utah. After his graduation they moved to Glendale. Mrs. Smith was always active in church auxiliaries, serving as Relief Society president at Glendale Glen-dale as well as president of the YWMIA in the Glendale Ward. While in that city she also served as assistant postmaster and managed a mercantile store. Survivors include her husband, who Is Precinct Justice in Cedar City; four daughters: Mrs. Kim-bal Kim-bal (Ellen) Jenson, and Mrs. Oliver Oli-ver (Elene) Jenson, Cedar City; Mrs. Freda Franz and Mrs. Virgil Vir-gil Owen, Oakland Calif.; two sons. Bline D. Smith. Baltimore, Md., and L. J. II. Smith. Las Vegas, Ve-gas, Nev.; as well as 22 grandchildren grand-children and 16 great-grandchild-me. |
