Show Coordinating Council Makes Report ESCALANTE VALLEY a num-1 ber of important questions were discussed at the regular meeting' ol the executive council of the Escalante Valley Coordinating Council on June 4. Don Apple-gate, Apple-gate, who has acted as head of the building committee for the new recreation building, is going to be in Salt Lake City for the summer, and a special meeting of the committee has been called call-ed for this week to appoint a new chairman to replace Mm. The committee will also consider consi-der bids which have been submitted sub-mitted by the L and M Decorators Decora-tors and Leigh Furniture and Carpet Co., both of Cedar City, for the painting and decorating of the building, and will make final decisions on the lighting fixtures to be installed. The council also discussed the well and pumping plant which will be needed to furnish water for the new building, and application applica-tion for a water right will be filed with the state engineer's office of-fice in the immediate future. Bob Hyde, who represents the valley on the board of directors of the South Central Utah Telephone Tele-phone Association reported on the recent board meeting which was held at Escalante. The Coordinating Co-ordinating Council discussed the REA proposal to reduce telephone association memberships from $10.00 to $10.00, but no definite conclusions were reached at the meeting. Mr. Hyde also reported report-ed that two new circuits would be installed on the valley system sys-tem to handle the large load of calls, and that a REA engineer was expected to be In the area soon to determine what was causing the repeated trouble which has been experienced with local calls. It was reported to the counccil that the right of dumping trash on property belonging to Heber Sevy was being seriously abused, and that the dump was in very bad condition. It was felt that a dozer should bbe used to clean up existing conditions and that signs should be erected to designate desig-nate the areas where dumping would be permitted in the future. It was suggested that this might be a combined project for the Lions Club and the Scouts. At the request of Bryner Wood, president of the Escalante Valley Wildlife Federation, who was unable un-able to be present, the council discussed a proposal by the federation fed-eration for developing the community com-munity recreation park on property prop-erty donated to the valley by Heber Sevy and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Moyle several years ago. jThe officers of the Wildlife Fed- , eratlon have felt for some time that the money which they were spending to maintain fishing ponds on private property was beipg largely wasted because it was difficult to get the water turned on at the proper times during the winter and large numbers num-bers of the fish were dying. Last year the group spend $285 maintaining main-taining these private ponds and the year before that they spent $325 for this purpose, and officers offi-cers of the Federation felt that the number of fish taken from these ponds did not justify the expenditure. They are proposing that the Wildlife Federation, in connection with any other civic groups which wished to participate partici-pate in the project, be permitted to construct a large, shallow reservoir res-ervoir on the south end of the park property, probably about an acre in size, to be stocked with fish and maintained by the federation, who would drill the well and provide a pump which would furnish enough water so the the overflow from the reser- voir would permit planting of trees, lawn and shrubbery to develop the park site. It was reported that the State Road Commission would probably probab-ly be able to furnish some assistance as-sistance in developing the park, particu'arly in providing a driveway and parking area, and a front fence, as part of their roadside park program, and it was also reported that the Lions Club might be interested In helping help-ing with this project. All plari3, of course, are tentative, pending a Wildlife Federation general meeting and action by the Coordinating Co-ordinating Council at a general session; however Council members mem-bers in attendance at this meeting meet-ing were enthusiastic about the proposal. Alex Wood reported that there is to be a school board member elected from this district this year, and the council felt that an attempt should be made again to have a board memb?r elected from the Escalante Valley. Val-ley. Although it Is generally agreed that the valley has ueen ably and fairly represented by board members from Paragonah, Enoch and other areas in the past, it Is felt that since the school population here is increasing in-creasing steadily, whereas the j other small schools in the district dis-trict are undergoing a gradual decrease, it Is only fair that we should have a representative from our area part of the time. Mrs. Phyllis Wood and Mrs. Marty Mar-ty Wood were appointed to see what could be done on this matter, mat-ter, and at the present time they are conducting a canvass of registered reg-istered voters in the valley to try to select a candidate for the school board who could command com-mand the support of the entire valley. To date about 15 names have been proposed, including both men and women, from Newcastle, New-castle, Modena and the Beryl -Richland area, and a straw poll will be conducted in the near future to determine which of these candidates would stand the best chance of being elected. Anyone who has not been contacted con-tacted and who wishes to make a recommendation or express an opinion on this matter is requested re-quested to contact either of the committee members as soon as possible.
