Show Notre Dame Take Redmen 7-2 Notre Dame High School of Price defeated the Cedar Redmen by a score of 7 to 2 Friday afternoon after-noon at Helper for the right to advance into the state Class B championship finals against Judge Memorial of Salt Lake City. Notre Dame blasted across six runs In the top half of the eighth, an extra Inning, to garner the victory. At the end of the regulation seven innings of play the two squads had battled to a 1 to 1 deadlock. It was In the eighth that the game was blasted open and two factors were extremely important In determining the outcome. First determining facor occurred occur-red in the sixth inning of play and came In the form of an unusually un-usually fine catch by Notre Dame's second sacker, Bonnaccl. The Redmen, trailing by a single sin-gle run, 1 to 0 going into the frame, started off with a hang. Eric Gardner walked and Neil Petty doubled behind him to put men on third and second with no one out. Gary Anderson drove the next pitch back of second base for what looked like a sure single and possibly a double. Bonnaccl, however, had different ideas. In a sensational diving Jump he snagged it for the out and tagged second to double Petty, Pet-ty, making it two away and Gardner was forced to hold on third. Phil Yergensen came through with a single behind Anderson to drive in Gardner and Alex Rollo walked to get another rally started. A error on the shortstip on Boyd Dover'3 drive loaded the bases again for the Redmen, but ot no avail, as -Ronnie Adams flied out to retire the side, with one tally across and the score tied at 1-all. In the top of the eighth inning, in-ning, a costly error In the field allowed a rally to get going for Notre Dame which netted them six rufls and a substantial leadj which they maintained. First man at the plate for no-tre no-tre Dame walked. The next drive, I was probably the difference in the game. It went to Gardner at 1 shortstop and looked like a sure double play ball. Anxious to con-! vert the play Gardner and Nelson apparently tensed and an error was committed at second and the runers were safe at second and first. A single pushed over the first run and put runners on first and third, a fly deep into centerfield was the first out, but went as a sacrifice, allowing a second tally to cross the plate. A double then scored the runner from first and another runner was put on base via the walk route, a sir.gl drove in another run and a double by Bonnaccl, scored the other two runners. In the bottom half of the frame the Redmen pushed in one more run for the final tally and a 7 to 2 score. Nevenner of Notre Dame was the winning pitcher, allowing the Redmen only five hits in the eight Innings of play. He also contributed heavily at the plate with three doubles in five trips. Notre Dame collected a total of nine hits, three in the extra Inning, off Anderson. |
