Show LETTERS TO THE EDITOR It seems that if we don't have enough trouble In our foreign lands already, the staff in Washington Wash-ington can make it by sending our Mr. Nixon over to the country coun-try that has warned him not to come. But he got .As neck bowed and went anyway. He got spit on and stoned, and if it hadn't been for the quick action of the police he may have lost his life. This could have caused World War III. Of course, Ike sent some of our crack troops over just in case. In my opinion our foreign neighbors are fighting to see Just who Is going to get the most out of our foreign trade. I am quite sure that if we stopped our foreign for-eign aid to the big shots over seas we would reduce our foreign for-eign troubles. Now, Secretary Benson Is acting act-ing on our cattle industry, saying say-ing that they are too high and that the public should resist the high prices, not realizing that as yet, our cost of production hasn't has-n't been reached, and is still under un-der parity with labor. Of course. when the government empolyees get a raise rnson has nothing to say. As I see it: If our vice president presi-dent wants to take chances, he he should get in a rocket and go to the moon. There may not be anyone there to stone him. Another thing concerning foreign aid; I wonder if it wouldn't be a good Idea to send a delegation over to Russia to see If we here In America can't get a little foreign for-eign aid. We don't get much help here! all we do is pay taxes to keep the big shots quarreling overseas. It seems that congress Is going to give Ike the power to extend our free trade another five years and take all the tariff off. This will give the foreign countries our business. Let's vote against anyone that believes In foreign aid and free trade. Let's keep America strong. Quite a few things have happened hap-pened since I wrote last; we had a big elephant show which creat ed quite a dust and took the money out of town. It seems that we should bring something to Cedar City that would bring outside people here to leave some money and business. A good race meet would do this. I see where the Church over at Kanab has put on two race meets, and have learned that Churches can be built with the proceeds. And this Is not all the business houses get something out of It. We have got a new business here In town which will hrinp people Into town, and they will leave some money here before they leave. It will also help the livestock business. So let's all get behind the livestock auction here in Cedar City. Clarence Lamoreaux P.S.: We can get three racing dates in August. Do we want any of them? I Since the Editor of this paper has always been most fair and cooperative in presenting any civic ci-vic problems, I feel we should give a rebuttal to the editorial of last week and mention some facts not generally known to the people or editor. In your article you mention that the Iron County Commission will not be involved In TV until the legal question is settled. If this is true then why did they spend $1,420.00 of Iron County money for a power line to Beaver's Beav-er's booster If they thought it was so illegal? That power line Is now serving the people of Par-owan Par-owan and Paragonah, which Is a good thing, but what of the rest of the county? Since the Commissioners Com-missioners have already made the plunge Into TV why be timid now? The Federal Communications Communica-tions Commission will tell you they are not going to stop anyone. any-one. You also mention the development develop-ment needed at Wood's Ranch. Personally I think they did the right thing In the purchase of that property, but Ill's examine the investment. The ground cost the county $20,000 two years ago, plus that It will cost something to develop and maintain. How many people have used it or can. Very few and we know It will be under snow seven months out of the year. In comparison with TV they estimate over 800 sets are In use In the county today with an average of four viewers per set or 3200 people a night enjoy en-joy TV 12 months a year. What other medium reaches so many people of all ages? So much has been done for a few of certain age groups able to play ball but what about the very young and the older people? I fail to see a great deal that we have done for them, yet, on TV you find programs designed for people of all ages and all types whether It be news, sports, music, drama, comedy or educational. Remember the School Board le vied one quarter of a mill especially es-pecially for TV which would give $8,000 now and $8,000 in July and would not lnterefere with other types of recreational developments. de-velopments. I do not stress the exclusion of everything but TV. There is enough money to do both, and whether we like It or not, at the present time we are paying money to state for TV now for channel 7 as operated by University of Utah and many of the programs have or will be shown on regular stations. It will cost the average person 57 cents a year for TV and who would object ob-ject to that. I say there is no need to constantly con-stantly go to the people with our hand out to help out TV when there Is ample money available In Iron CoVinty to do the Job. Let's give the people something for a change that all can enjoy. We are a wealthy countv. If conditions were other. wise my thought would be different. dif-ferent. The county has a bid with a performance bond guarantee to place all three chnanels In the entire county; the people should indicate whether or not they want it. In conclusion I would suggest that the Iron County Receation Committee and the Iron County I School Board make a statement as to what they will do. The Iron County Commissioners likewise, like-wise, and quit stalling as it has been for almost two years since television was first put Into this area and we are Just as far from financial solution as the second sec-ond week it was In. The people should know what your Intentions Inten-tions are immediately so the TV committee plus the people may act accordingly. JOHN ROWBERRY |
