Show C S II Bronco Squad Delivers Good I In Nip-Tuck Game Against Chaffey I College of Southern Utah Bronco basketball squad in its first appearance of the current season came through with flying colors Saturday evening by downing down-ing a strong Chaffey Junior College Col-lege of California team, by a score of 69 to 62. A comparatively low scoring game for junior college ball the first half was especially slow with a score of 39 to 32. Chaffey with a game behind them against Dixie the previous night, hit earlier ear-lier in the game while the Bronco Bron-co crew showed an early tenseness. tense-ness. Didn't Dominate Although the local crew held both a half time and a final game lead they did not dominate domin-ate the scoring by any means. Chaffey pulled from behind in the early part of the second period per-iod by three points and the lead sec-sawed back and forth through most of the game. Scoring honors of the evening went to two Chaffey stars, Eblen, a pivot man who garncted 26 points for high for the evening, and Goodwin who garnered 19 for the California quintet. Between the two they scored 45 of the points. The scoring for the Broncos was pretty well divided with 12 men of the 16 man squad who saw action, each getting into the scoring column with at least one field goal. Coach C'leo Pctty's starting five for the game and the second half was as follows: Douglas Stoker, center; John Wood and Dale Nielson, guards; with Keith Cooley and Ted Atherley, at the forward positions. Good Second Platoon A second platoon of players who came in near the middle of the first half consisted of Donald Floyd, center; Jerry Bertleson and Ray Robinson, forwards and Bob Davis and Gary Evans as guards. This group comparitively small in stature with the exception of Flovd. showed a good qualitv of ball handling but were ineffective inef-fective on the bankboards because be-cause of the lack of heighlh. Don Kay Melling and Steve, Rozclle, both familiar to local fans were sent into the line up late in the second quarter with Me'ling showing a lot of spark from a defensive standpoint. Davis although small was in the I right place at the right time 'while in the lineup, j Doug Stoker, in the key-hole slot most of the evening, came through with some fine ball handling and tied with effective Wood for scoring honors with 13 points. His mist effective shot is a fade away jump that is very difficult to guard. Cooley, whom fans have seen mostly in the center position, seemed a little out of place in the corner, but should come through this year as a center or forward. Comes Through Robinson, who missed from the foul line as well as the floor in the early stages of the game, was the most effective scorer in the late minutes of the game. With three minutes left on the clock and the Bioncos trailing by two, Robinson connected with two field goals and six from the foul line to post an individual score of 10 points in the waning minutes and pull the Broncos into in-to their lead and to a win in the season opener. Fridav night the Broncos travel to Las Vegas for a game gaainst an always strong Compton Junior College team, of Compton, Calif, in a benefit performance. Saturday Sat-urday the two teams. CSU and Compton, move to Cedar City and the Memorial Fieldhouso where the local fans will get a second look at the Bronco squad.
