Show Honors Won by Utah 4-H'ers HONOR AWARDS were received by 4-H Club members for their impressive im-pressive records in the 1954 National 4-H Canning, Dress Revue, Car-den, Car-den, and Health programs. An educational trip to the 3l)rd 4-11 Club Con-pess, Con-pess, Chicago, November 28 December 2, was received by each teen-ager. Davit Vilia Holvnk Achievement in the 4-II Health program by Rarbara Wagstaff, 17, of American Fork, has brought her ftatewide recognition and an all-expense all-expense triptotheNationul 4-H Club Congress in Chicago as guest of the Kellogg Co., Battle Creek, Mich. Her mother is the leader of the club which Rarbara serves as president presi-dent and assistant leader. Following the health project for six years, Barbara first improved her own health habits and concentrated on community health. All club members mem-bers had physical and dental examinations examin-ations and studied posture, health and safety hazards. They promoted the cleaning up of ditches, covering of culverts and keepingsmall children away from such hazards. They marked danger spots with signs. Cardening, a favorite project with Frank Blackham, 17, of Helper, has brought him statewide recognition in the 4-H Garden awards program. His trip award to the National 4-H Club Congress in Chicago was provided pro-vided by Allis-Chalmers Mfg. Co. " Mrs. Lester Blackham leads the local club. Frank has been a junior leader and was president twice. Work in his garden, now one acre in size, has taught him the advantage of raising good vegetables and how to rewgnize and control insect pests andwwls. He fif;uns the value of vegetables veg-etables used at home at $77. He has made 110 garden exhibits. His demonstrations, dem-onstrations, public speaking, radio talks and trips have brought him poise and self confidence. He is saving sav-ing his profits so he can go to college. The 4-H Dress Revue award for the State of Utah, went to Klaine Davis, 17, of Vernal, who received a trip to the National 4-H Club Congress Con-gress in Chicago as the guest of Simplicity Sim-plicity Pattern Co. Klaine has been a sewing leader for two years; placed second in State Clothing Achievement, Achieve-ment, and won an award at last year's state Dress Revue. Her club leader is Maryetta Wardle. Her winning outfit is a dress and coat. The coat of navy blue velour is lined with matching milium. It is full length with concealed pockets and shawl collar. A rose-pink and navy blue jacquard one-piece dress, has full pleated skirt. As her accessories ac-cessories she chose a navy hat trimmed trim-med with gold, and navy shoes, bag and gloves. The cost of her outfit was $76.51. State honors in the 4-H Canning program for 1954 in Utah were awarded to Vilate Holyoak, lf, of Moab, who put up 1,720 quarts of fruit, vegetables and meat in six of her seven years in club work. Much of the food preserved was grown In her own 4-H garden. Kerr Class pro vided her all-expense trip to the National Na-tional 4-H Club ('(ingress in Chicago. Vilate has attended every canning demonstration in Grand County since she was 10 and exhibited her work each year. Her club leaders are Carol Hines and Klaine Peterson. Vilate has been president of each club and is now a Junior Leader. After anot her year in high school, she plans to enter college. Vilate's Canning project has helped the family food budget and given variety and balance to the meals. All these programs are conducted under the direction of the Cooperative Extension Service. |
