Show Dedication Program Invitation Extended Saturday night, Dec. 11 dedicatory services for the new North Elqmentary School will be held by the Iron County Board of Education, and an invitation to the public to attend at-tend the ceremonies has been extended by Ianthus Wright, superintendent. The dedicatory program will get underway at 7:30 p.m. Saturday evening and following the program a tour of the building and its facilities will be conducted by the Board! nnri the facultv of the school. i The building was put into operation this fall and has received re-ceived favorable comment from nationally recognized educators, Wright stated. Construction costs, handled by Witt Construction Co. of Provo, Utah, amounted to $584,951.00. General contract was $-145,950 with sub contracts let as follows: lighting contract, $33,G00, Millard Electric of Fillmore; Plumbing, 578,851 let to Atkin Pluming and Heating of Cedar City and architectural archi-tectural fees of $20,550. Tlir irliitrf ft r tVin Villi lflinrr was L. Robert Gardner, of Cedar City. However, according to Wright, he was required to employ em-ploy a landscape architect, a lighting engineer, structual engineer en-gineer and a heating engineer. Fees for additional technical ser-ices ser-ices were taken from the architect's arch-itect's portion. Outstanding Plant Those who attend the ded- I ication services Saturday will be shown one of the outstanding educational plants in the west, Wright stated. All of the facilities, the additional features of the building, and reasons for their being, will be explained he pointed out. A few of the features, not generally gen-erally known by the public, which the building offers have been pointed out by Superintendent Superintend-ent Wright. I In the first place the building maintenance and repairs have been reduced as much as humanly human-ly possible. Hallways are covered on either side with an seramic brick that can not be marred with food and fingermarks, and which will allow pencil and crayon marks to simply be wiped off. The entrance doors are constructed con-structed of metal, making them fireproof and they should last a lifetime. The building itself is fireproof with every precaution taken in this respect. Within the construction patrons will find that where brick could be used it has been used to eliminate cost as much as possible. Ceilings Ceil-ings of the building have been lowered for two specific reasons, Wright pointed out: First to save heating costs and second for the sake cf cheaper construction. Included in Contract Wright also explained that with the exception of the desks, tables, and chairs, all of the furniture in the building has been included in the general contract. Not only does this bring into consideration the cost of the construction of the cabinets cab-inets and desks for the faculty members, clothes racks and other important features of the rooms, but the playground, cement walks and fencing of the grounds was also a part of that general contract. In a number of contracts being be-ing let for similar constructions around the state these features are separate and reduce the actual ac-tual cost considerably of the general construction. According to Wright, the building build-ing cost the county just $12.80 a square foot, which, he emphasized emphasiz-ed is a lower rate than most similar sim-ilar constructions in the state. Adding the grounds and walks and roads square footage cost was raised to $13.48. Special Rooms An activity room, adjacent to the kitchen on the west side of the building, is accessible from the outside, as is the "Multipurpose "Multi-purpose room" or auditorium. Wright explained that the rooms could be used during the evening, even-ing, after school hours or during dur-ing the summer months without opening up the whole building. Civic or interested groups could use these facilities, he pointed out. Each room in the building is individually thermastatically controlled making the feasibility of use of these rooms even more likely. In addition restroom facilities (Continued on Back Page) llarlh Elementary (Continued from Page One) can be opened in connection with the playground area to the south without opening up the entire building. Two-Wing Structure The building consists of two wrings with the first and second grades composing one wing, along; with the offices, kitvhen aril activity room, while the other wing is used for the third thru sixth grades. Each of these uonps has a separate play-Terroiind play-Terroiind area, eliminating the problem pro-blem of the larger children bullying: bully-ing: the youngsters. The division divi-sion of these two grounds is simply sim-ply by one of the wings of the building and was not an additional add-itional cost in fencing or construction. con-struction. Shower facilities are available for both the boys and girls in the restrooms adjacent to the auditorium. Wright pointed out. Also all restrooms in the build-in build-in d have the appliances above the floor level eliminating a cleaning problem. Floors can be cleaned with little effort. Waste receptacles in all rooms are also built in to eliminate the problem pro-blem of waste baskets and catchall catch-all units. Everyone Is invited to attend the dedicatory affair. The program pro-gram plus the tour will be well worth the time, it was pointed out. |
