Show Dixie Forest Fires Below Normal, Says Official Forest fire occurance was slightly below normal during the past season on the Dixie National Nation-al Forest, according to Boyd Leonard, timber staff officer. Twenty-six forest fires occured from all causes, six of which were caused by people. Two fires were started by fishermen, two by hunters, one by a stockman, and one by a party unknown. Twenty were started by lightning. light-ning. All were suppressed by the Dixie National Forest Fire Control Con-trol Organization, including the per diem guards. This is fewer man-caused fires than the average over the past years which is believed to be the result of greater consciousness conscious-ness of fire danger on the part of the people in general, Mr. Leonard said. The Dixie Forest wishes to express ex-press appreciation to the press, the radio, the management of the theaters, and the many business bus-iness houses of Cedar City and surrounding towns for their cooperation co-operation in displaying Smokey Bear and other fire prevention reminders in their display windows win-dows during the fire season. It is this wholehearted cooperation that makes fire prevention activity ac-tivity so successful in Southwestern Southwest-ern Utah, thus preventing needless need-less loss of natural resources from fire, according to Mr. Leonard. |
