Show CSU's Widely Publicized Men's Dormitory Visited by Impressed New Mexico Delegates Since the recent publication in a leading college magazine of an article depicting the efficient operations of the ultra-modern men's dormitory at the College of Southern Utah, considerable interest has been aroused among j schools throughout the nation. I Latest to outwardly display its j j curiosity was a delegation of educators from Portales, New Mexico, who made a tour-inspec- ;tion Thursday of the new housing i unit on the campus. Three executives from Eastern New Mexico University, Portales, comprised the representative group. Delegates were: Mr. A. E. : Hunt, university business manager; man-ager; Mr. Robert Merrell, univer-1 sity architect; and Mr. Marius Stookey, professor of music. These men were very much impressed im-pressed with the dormitory. Surprised at Rent Used to the usual exorbitant rent, they found it difficult to realize that such satisfactory and comfortable living quarters for students could be provided for the moderate rental cost. The unique two-story, two-wing structure, while completely modern mo-dern and convient in every respect, re-spect, has been designed to give maxium comfort and service for the minimum expense. Officials at the College of Southern Utah disclosed that 'monthly rent per student is a-, a-, bout $10.00 ... a price that is pro-Ibably pro-Ibably unequalled throughout the nation. This low cost is achieved through careful planning and construction. Each apartment is ingeniously compact, featuring fold-away tables, small, though adequate, appliances; and built-In built-In drawer and shelf space. I Accommodations for 200 male students were made available I through the addition of this dormitory, dor-mitory, which is yet in final construction con-struction stages. I Each apartment houses four occupants, and each apartment contains two bedrooms, bathroom bath-room and kitchen, plus closet and storage room. I The spacious bathrooms each have two wash basins. Only the latest lighting, heating, and venliation methods are employed. employ-ed. Eastern New Mexico University, Univer-sity, the visitors explained , is a-bout a-bout the same size as the College of Southern Utah. Portales is located lo-cated also in an agricultural region. The university administration became interested in the CSU housing project since that have similar bousing problems. McRay Cloward, CSU housing coordinator and author of the article which appeared in the educational magazine, was in charge of the tour. Besides viewing the dormitory, the group was shown through the library-auditorium building, now nearing completion, Thorley Music Mu-sic Hall, and the college gymnas-um. gymnas-um. Mr. Cloward anticipates others becoming interested enough to investigate the dormitory. |
