Show Parowan Rams Stage "Cinderella" Finish Over Cedar in Region Tourney The Cedar high school basketball basket-ball team was knocked out of a chance to play in the state tournament, tour-nament, when Coach Ray Engle-stead's Engle-stead's Redmen fell before Coach Twist Jones' Parowan Rams in a sensational finish of the first game of the playoff series in the Parowan gym last week end. The victory moved the Rams into the final game Saturday night against the Hinckley Mustangs, which brought a tournament berth to the Parowan team. The Rams staged a sensational sensation-al rally in the last few seconds of the game with the Redmen to turn what looked like sure defeat de-feat into a one point victory, 59 to 58. The Rams were trailing by 10 points with about three minutes min-utes to play and were behind six points with only 30 seconds left, but John V. Benson, who played brilliantly throughout, brought the team mates victory with a two-pointer just before the gun sounded to end the game. It was one of the most brilliant finishes we have seen made by a high school team in many a year. The two teams battled on even terms through the first half, Cedar Ce-dar holding a 13 to 12 lead at the end of the first quarter and gaining slightly in the second period to gain a 32 to 29 half-time half-time advantage. In the third period the Rams tied the score at 36-36, but from that point on the Redmen pulled into a 50 to 43 lead by the end of the period. The lead was in creased to 53 43, and then 56 to 44, before the Rams started their final drive. Although Benson and his team mates were gradually closing the gap the game seemed safe enough for Cedar with the score standing at 58 to 52 with 30 seconds left, but those last 30 seconds completely upset the situation sit-uation and Benson scoring sensationally sen-sationally tipped in enougn points to win the game and knock Cedar out of any further consideration. Both teams played excellent ball throughout, with every player doing his part, but the 34 point scoring of Benson overshadowed the work of the others. in tne second game of the night, Hinckley pulled out a one point victory over Hurricane, with Robinson leading the scoring for Hinckley with 24 points and Ro-zelle Ro-zelle matching his efforts for Hurricane. The Hinckley squad held onto a slight lead most of the time, and pulled into what looked like a safe margin near the end of the game. However, Rozelle led a rally that closed the gap to one point, but time ran out on the Hurricane squad and Hinckley won 48 to 47. In the final play-off Hinckley took a first quarter lead of 13 to 11, and was very much in the ball game until they lost one of their first string players by way of the foul route. The Hinckley team stayed in the lead throughout through-out most of the second quarter until Parowan gained a 25 to 22 margin as the half-time neared. However, Hinckley rallied and the teams left the floor with the score knotted at 25-25, Hinckley took another lead as the second half opened but Parowan Paro-wan soon tied it up and then pulled ahead at 34 to 27, and then pulled away to a 63 to 51 victory that put the Rams into the state tournament for the first time in 21 years. The playing of David Orton kept the Rams In the game throughout the first three quarters, until his team mates all caught the spirit in the final drive. Cedar and Hurricane tangled in a friendly encounter on the second night with second string-ers string-ers playing most of the game, and the Redmen winning handily handi-ly by a score of 57 to 39.
