Show Junior Hiqh Students Offered Council I By Donald Ford. Guidance Counselor The Junior high school movement move-ment was started some years ago to try and better meet the needs of students. The people who started the movement saw the need for exploring different fields to try out different interests inter-ests before making a vocational choice. They also wanted a more orderly transition from the elementary ele-mentary school to the high school. In order to wrk toward the goals set up for junior high school, we have two programs, our activity and our guidance program. Our activities arc carried on as a regular part of Our school. At 11 o'clock each day the students stu-dents are able to elect and register reg-ister for any one of 15 clubs. The clubs cover such fields as student government, wild life, journalism, photography, home making, industrial arts, glee club, dramatics, business clubs, band, agricultural, art, reading and aviation. Each student in his or her three years in Junior high may take part in as many as six of these activities. The guidance program is designed de-signed to help the student with any personal or school nrnhlpm to help the teacher help the child through the use of psvcho-logical psvcho-logical and achievement "tests m i personal records. Another very important job is giving help to the student in choosing a vo-cation. vo-cation. The service of the counselor is open to any student. They may bring in any problem troubling them and together the counselor! and student try to work a solution. solu-tion. Most of this type of guidance guid-ance is voluntary but occasional- ly a student is called in for help. Help in choosing a vocation is becoming more and more important import-ant as the complexity and number num-ber of jobs increase. The student today is faced with a staggering number of choices, a great many of these requiring very specialized specializ-ed training. If this important choice can be made early, before be-fore high school, much time and money may be saved by working work-ing directly toward the objective. To help in this each ninth grade student is asked to fill out a plan sheet. Here the counselor and student try to set up a vocational voca-tional goal then plan a high school course which will best help in reaching that goal. With these two programs along with our basic core classes clas-ses we hope to meet the objectives object-ives of a good junior high school and turn out students who are well able to take their place as citizens in our community. |
