Show Broncos Tank 95 Points in Juco Tournament The Branch Agricultural college col-lege basketball team was knocked knock-ed from the championship round of the Region Four Junior College Col-lege tournament in the first night of play, when they fell before the Eastern Arizona College of Education Edu-cation team. The elimination so early in the meet was the result of ridiculous scheduling when the Eastern Arizona and the Broncos, the only two first place teams in the meet, were matched in the first round of play. The Arizona team went on to win the championship and the Broncos easily took consolation honors. The Broncos were victims of a last quarter "hot streak" by the Arizona team, that turned what looked like victory into defeat. Coach Geo Petty's squad took a 17 to 15 lead over the Arizona champs in the first period, but dropped behind 30 to 29 at half time. In the third period the Broncos started to function smoothly and pulled steadily away from their opponents until near the end of the period they were leading by a margin of 54 to 42. The Arizon-ians Arizon-ians rallied to close the gap to 55 to 47 by the end of the period, and then as the final period opened, started a sensational long shot scoring snree that finally fin-ally pulled them into the lead, 63 to 62. The Bronco tied it up at 65-all, but again their opponents oppon-ents pulled ahead, taking the game by a margin of 72 to 68. In the other opening round games, Snow took the measure of Carbon. 69 to 65, Phoenix trimmed Weber by a 69 to 66 margin, and Boise drew a bye when Dixie withdrew. In the second round of nlav B A C walloped the Weber Wildcats, Wild-cats, 55 to 43, with freshmen of both squads playing most of the game. This gave the B A C a chance to play for the consolation consola-tion title, meeting the Carbon Eagles, who had drawn a second round bye. This game was almost al-most a farce with the Broncos running up a 95 point score to 59 for the Price team. Eastern Arizona trimmed Phoenix, Phoe-nix, 85 to 62 in the second round, while Boise was taking the measure mea-sure of Snow 59 to 48. In the final game Eastern Arizona Ari-zona pulled out a one-point victory vic-tory over Bise, 68 to 67, and Snow managed to beat Phoenix 70 to 58 to take third place. As a result of its victory the Eastern Arizona team will enter the National Junior College meet in Hutchinson, Kan., as representative repre-sentative of this area. At the close of the tournament an all-star squad of 10 men was honored, With Boyd "Gooney" Adams the only member of the B A C team to gain recognition on the squad. 1 |
