Show Main Street Traffic Noise The board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce during the past two weeks has been studying ways and means of eliminating noise from heavy trucks on Main stjneet, and also studying a most important matter of traffic traf-fic safety on the street. Both are problems of vital importance import-ance to the people of Cedar City and the Chamber board should be complimented on its effort to correct the condition. condi-tion. Definite recommendations on the two problems will undoubtedly soon be made to the City Council. The first, noise by heavy trucks, has become a rather definite nuisance and there is little doubt but that the condition can be substantially corrected if a definite policy poli-cy is adopted by the City Council. No one maintains that all truck drivers are guilty of unnecessary noise while driving on Main street, but many of them are. Many of these truck drivers seem to delight in racing their engines, jamming gears, and generally making as much noise as possible, and there is no reason why they should not be issued tickets for this sort of disturbance. Trucking companies frown on this type of driving by their employees, and in most cases have notified drivers that the individual will be responsible for any such violations. viola-tions. The traffic safety problem deals with increased business expansion on Main street between Center and 200 South streets, and particularly since the El Rey Cafe has been designated as a luncheon stop for bus passengers. When the long buses are parked in front of the cafe with cars parked on the East side of the street, it leaves very little space for passing traffic and creates a serious traffic hazard. haz-ard. Under present parking regulations there is no violation in the practice of parking buses in front of the cafe, but since there has been so much expansion in that block on Main street, with the resulting increase in traffic and parking, some correction of the situation should be undertaken. under-taken. The Chamber board will attempt to find a solution without interferring with normal business of the firms located lo-cated in that section, and make recommendations to the Qty Council. It is an important step and the Chamber officers of-ficers should receive the support of everyone in solving the problem. c |
