Show Selfishness and Greed on the Home Front Much of the chaos in the world today which threatens eruption into a third world war, is the direct cause of selfishness and Rreed. Shaping world events that mean bloodshed for the youth of many countries is the greed and lust for power of dictators and politicians. But Rreed and selfishness does not stop there il reaches riRht down to the smallest village, and such selfishness sel-fishness is adding its part to the chaos and trouble of the economy of the country and the world. During the past few days we have witnessed a most disgusting outburst of the selfishness right here in our own community. We refer to the rush of buying up food and other supplies as soon as it looked like the United States would be involved In a long conflict. Most of these people offer excuses for their purchases, but there can be no other name for it than "hoarding" just a case of each individual "grabbing" for all he can get regardless of the effect it may have on the economy of the country or the welfare of other people. Any observer could see local residents, some of them considered our most prominent people, buying up canned goods by the case, woman flocking to the stores to lay in large supplies of such items as sheets, hosiery and whatnot. Such nets will force prices up and up, and will cause unnecessary scarcities, but these people care nothing noth-ing about such matters as long as their shelves and basements base-ments are stacked high with goods. Such people should be proud of their acts, and we are wondering If they should not be decorated with some sort of a "hoarder" medal. |
