Show V n Second Grade Pupils Make Study oi Community Activities A miniature post office which actually functions has been set up in Mrs. Miriam Luke's second sec-ond grade room. The post office, suggested and constructed by the children as a phase of their study stu-dy of community life, has been a busy place during the past week. The children made Valentines for their classmates, wrote their friends' names on the Valentines, Valen-tines, and mailed them at the post office. Later they took turns in being mailmen and sorted and distributed the Valentines.' Now that Valentine Day is passed, thoy are learning how to write letters, how to address envelopes en-velopes correctly, how to make out money orders, and how to send messages on post cards. The project, following the latest trend in education, has provided a fine integration of social studies, art, and language activities. It was initiated by a visit to the Cedar City post office where Rulon Wood met the children, conducted conduct-ed them through the building, explained how mail Is transported, transport-ed, how it is sorted and distributed, distrib-uted, and told interesting stories about the duties of postal employees. Running a post office is only one of the many community experiences ex-periences these children have had. Earlier in the year, they visited the fire station, sat in fire trucks, tried on the firemens' asbestos gloves, and learned first-hand how firemen fight fires. They returned to their room and discussed how they could help to prevent fires and what they might do In emergencies. They visited the police station; they learned that policemen are our friends; they learned how policemen protect and help us. I They listed and discussed things they could do to help make Cedar Ce-dar City a safer and better place . to live. I As the study progresses, the ! children are cooperating to write a book on community life with one chapter devoted to each of the different community helpsrs they have studied. |
