Show MEN WITH DEPENDENTS MAY BE DRAFTED. SAYS SELECTIVE SERVICE HEAD Many Selective Service registrants who have been deferred from military mili-tary service solely because they have dependents will eventually be inducted unless they become engaged en-gaged in activities essential to the Nation's war effort, Lt. Colonel H. A. Rich, State Director of Selective Service declared today. "We are rapidly approaching the stage where everyone must be working work-ing or fighting to win the war," Director Di-rector Rich asserted. War requirementsthe require-mentsthe demand for manpower by essential industries as wen as the armed forces will compel many local boards within the next seven! months to find selectees for their quotas among registrants who have dependents. "Right now local boards are reconsidering all registrants with dependency deferments for two major ma-jor purposes. The first Is to eliminate elimi-nate from this class all men who cannot prove that their dependents need their earned Income for support sup-port In a reasonable manner and all who cannot prove that they did not acquire dependents to avoid military service. The second purpose is to distinguish between men who have dependents but are not engaged in activities aiding the Nation's war effort and those who are contributing contribut-ing for victory by their work as civilians. "By making this distinction between be-tween those engaged in essential activities and those whose civilian occupations are not contributing to the war effort lt Is desired to induce in-duce a voluntary movement of the latter Into essential activities and thus to release for military service men without dependents who must be deferred as 'necessary men' until un-til they can be replaced at their work." Persons engaged in nonessential activities, however, should not cease their present employment until their services are needed In some essential activity, the Director warned. |
