Show Rabbits Object of New Industry The long-cared rodent which has been causing millions of dollars of damage to crops throughout the westnamely oryctolagus cuniculus or in plain English, Jack rabbit-may rabbit-may soon meet his doom. This Is the perdictlon of sports experts who see the rabbit becoming becom-ing the object of a new and profitable profit-able industry. As long as the war lasts, and as long as men wear' felt hats, the new industry should pay big dividends. It seems that before the war rabbit rab-bit skins from Eurpose and Russia were shipped to the United States. A large supply of pelts was on hand when war was declared between England and Germany and thus little difference until this year, when the supply started dwindling and manufacturers called upon trappers in the West. The reason for' the demand is that the pelts are specially prepared prepar-ed and made into felt for the manufacture man-ufacture of mens hats. Thus, no rabbit skins, no felt hats. Like deer and other game animals, rabbits seem to Increase In cycles and then suddenly diminish- from a combination of malnutrition malnu-trition and disease until a minimum point, ' then they start increasing again. At the present time rabbits' in Utah have been at the bottom of their cycle and are starting on the upgrade. Therefore, during the coming com-ing year, they should multiply In sufficient numbers to Insure a profitable pro-fitable business to the rabbit hunters. |
