Show ben. Jake Garn visits Muir and talks about space ilk , ? ' Senator Jake Gam visited Leo J. Muir Elementary School last week and shared his experiences when he was on board the space shuttle Discovery with the student stu-dent body at an assembly. Garn showed a film about his adventures in space in 1985 to the children. The film enabled the students to see a view of the earth from the space shuttle. They were able to identify the Great Salt Lake and Bear Lake from an aerial view. They also watched Gam and the other crew members float about the Discovery cabin due to the effects of zero gravity. While on board the Discovery, Garn said he performed per-formed many experiments. In addition, he helped with research on the effects of space travel on the heart and experimented with the first official space toys. Gam played with a spiral jiro, yo-yo, paddle ball and jacks in space. One of the missions of the Space Shuttle Discovery was to launch a satellite. Because of a malfunction on the satellite, crew members performed an unplanned space walk in attempts to repair the malfunctioning satellite. Gam talked about the different feelings of having no bounds in space caused by the lack of gravity. grav-ity. He said that he lacked the vocabulary to adequately express his experience in space. Gam said that some of Muir's students may have the opportunity to travel on a space flight to the planet Mars in the future. Because of the rapid advancements in modem technology, the senator told the students that many of the jobs they will hold in the future have yet to be invented. He stressed that individuals expressing a desire to become an astronaut must prepare now. Gam encouraged en-couraged the Muir students to be diligent in their studies of math and science and make the most of their education. At the close of the assembly, time was turned turn-ed over to the student body to ask Gam questions. These questions led to a discussion of the problems of eating while in space.
