Braves top winner BOUNTIFUL The Utah Council for Computers in Education Edu-cation announced that for the first time in the history of the student programming project competition, a single high school captured both first and second place honors. The competition, held at the EXPO MART in early Feb. , saw programming pro-gramming teams from Bountiful High School place first and second in the final round. The competition requires students to demonstrate the principles prin-ciples of team programming by creating a marketable software application. ap-plication. Last year's winner programmed pro-grammed pull-down menus and a bibliographical footnote manager utility for Word Perfect. This year's winning team created an interactive video game entitled "Paint Wars." Members of the programming team include Bountiful Boun-tiful High School students Richard Moore, Regan Thacker and Ben Kempe. Curt Cottrell contributed a number of original graphics to the ' project. The first place team received receiv-ed certificates totaling $150 from local computer companies. The second place programming project was entitled "ICONZ." Members of this team, Mark Midgley and Cam Collins of Bountiful Boun-tiful High, received $100 in gift certificates. cer-tificates. ICONZ is a mouse-driven DOS menu system that allows the user to customize the graphic icons that represent software applications. This frees the user from the rigid syntax requirements of typing in DOS commands. The winners were honored at a banquet held at the Red Lion Inn on the evening of the contest. |
