Show ! American dream still Utah lifestyle j Now here's some encouraging news from the U.S. Census I Bureau. Utah ranks eighth among the 50 states in the percen- tage of households occupied by their owners. It's a piece of the American Dream, of course, to own and J occupy your own home. Utah's high ranking indicates we have ; a lifestyle that can be the envy of otherse specially to ; residents in states like California, where inflationary prices are J beginning to preclude young marrieds from tecoming J homeowners. ; The report, by Census Bureau statistician Robert R. Callis, ; says Utah's home ownership rate remained fairly stable during ; the 1980s. Hardest hit by a decade of home ownership declines ' nationally, were U.S. householders under the age 35. That i j group dropped from a 58.2 home ownership rate to 56.6 per- i cent during the 1980s. 1 Utah's rate of home ownerships is boosted by higher-than- : average numbers of two-income families. Callis also said that 1 Utah's high percentage of family households is linked to high j percentages of home ownership. I In 1989, the last year shown in the report, West Virginia had j the highest home ownership rate at 74.8 percent. New York I was the lowest at 52.3 percent. Behind West Virginia, the top : rankings included: Maine, 73.6 percent; Michigan, 73.2 per- : cent; Pennsylvania, 72.8 percent; Mississippi, 72.2 percent; Oklahoma, 71.4 percent; South Carolina, 71.0 percent, and " finally, Utah, 70.4 percent. There's no place like home. You can still make that happen in Utah. |
