' , i V I f Chances for state titles look good By G.BRETT HART Sports Editor BOUNTIFUL The smoke has cleared; the dust has settled. The unpredictable, topsy-turvy Region 1 and 6 battles for championship distinction and state tournament tourna-ment appearances have all been decided. It's time to get down to serious state tournament business. Needless to say, Davis County will be well represented rep-resented in both the 3A and 4A state tournaments with Clearfield, Davis, Viewmont, Bountiful and Woods Cross qualifying. J At various times throughout the season, each of the I teams, minus Clearfield, enjoyed either a brief stay at I the top of their respective regions (except for View- I mont whose stay was rather lengthy) or a top-three ranking in the state polls. I Now each team must put its region record and ex- I perience behind and start tournament play with a I clean slate in quest for all the (proverbial) marbles a J state championship. Prospects for both a 3A and 4A state championship in Davis County have never looked so good as the Vikes, Darts, Braves and 'Cats each have the necessary tools to win it. Each of the teams has shown championship mettle on different occasions throughout the season. What it will come down to, however, is who comes to play on a given day. That one factor alone makes high school basketball exciting and unpredictable. In both tourneys, action begins pitting each region championship team against the fourth place finisher from another region. Second place teams will face their third place opponents, and so on. State tournament competition gets underway Wednesday at Weber State University as the battle royal for state 3A honors commences. Region 6 competitors will feature champion Jordan High. The Beetdiggers will face Mountain Crest at 10 a.m. Later, second place finisher Woods Cross will match mat-ch guns against Uintah at 6 p.m. Third place Murray will try to overcome Wasatch at 1 p.m. while fourth place Bountiful will take on region champion Emery at 9 p.m. The 4A tournament gets underway Thursday at the University of Utah. The Vikings, who clinched sole ownership of the Region 1 title Friday beating Layton, will take on Region 3s fourth place finisher Taylorsville at 8:10 p.m. Clearfield, Region l's fourth place finisher, will try to upset Region 3 champion Hillcrest at 2:30 p.m., also on Thursday. 4A state tourney action continues Friday pitting second se-cond place Davis against Region 3's third place contender con-tender Cyprus Friday at 1 :40 p.m. Bonneville takes on Bingham at 5:40 p.m., Friday at the U of U. i Viewmont's Brad Bodily, 52, pictured in the Vikes' game earlier this season with Bountiful) will help lead the region champion Viking team against Taylorsville, at 8:10 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the 4A state tournament. |
