Show Stick to cows PRICE A rancher's request to change his grazing permit in the San Rafael Swell from cattle only to include domestic sheep has been denied by an administrative law judge who said the change would threaten wild animal survival. The Bureau of Land Management had denied Joe Iriart's request to include domestic sheep in his grazing allotment near the San Rafael Reef. In rejecting the rancher's appeal, the judge said the BLM is charged charg-ed with managing public lands in a manner that will protect them in their natural condition so they will provide food for fish and wildlife as well as domestic animals. Domestic sheep in the area would result in competition with desert bighorn sheep for forage, water and space, the ruling said. |
