This week we sent our man on the - street reporter out in an effort , to discover the viewpoints of community members. The following question was asked: Do you feel there should be legislation governing what should be shown on pay TV? Joseph E. Fox: "I don't think so. When people pay for the service they're making the decision right then and there. If they didn't want the service they wouldn't pay for It They'd boycott it,., .and. pay TV would have to clean up its shows.'" John Pragle: "People should have the right to watch what they want to. No one is forced to watch what they don't want to. I'm against legislation deciding on this issue." Margie Mosdell: "No. I don't think that someone else should say want I want to see. If they don't like it, have them turn it off. It would be like someone coming into my kitchen and telling me what I can and can't cook." Michelle Griffith: "Yes. I think that TV when it isn't controlled can be morally bad. It kind of contributes to violence, not neccessarily here, but in other places." ; Richard Rowley: "There are no simple answers to the question. Censorship has always been really difficult to administer, everyone wants to see it done, but nobody knows how to do it. Parents have no control over what their kids see on pay TV so perhaps control from outside the family would be justified on that basis. Children are a little more impressionable and need a little more protection than grown-ups do." Ron Bost: Yes and no. If I'm paying for cable TV, I feel I have the right to have whatever programming I choose in my home. I also subscribe sub-scribe to a certain moral code and moral ethic and I wouldn't buy this porno stuff to bring into my home. If it's on the channel that I'm paying for, than I have the option of turning the thing off and not watching. I do feel I have the right to make the choice, and the legislature shouldn't take that from me." |
