Show Season of surprises Theater season underway CEDAR CITY -Theater goers this year at Southern Utah State College will be treated to a series of surprises, from those found in the comedy antics of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" to the surprise twists in the musical extravaganza "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street." Tickets for SUSC's 23rd season of campus-comunity campus-comunity theater "Expect the Unexpected: A Season of Surprises" are now on sale at the SUSC Box Office, 586-7876, 586-7876, from 1 to 5 p.m. weekdays. The season begins Nov. 12 with "Midsummer Night's Dream" and ends May 21 with the final performance of "Sweeney Todd." In between there are four additional per-formances per-formances an evening of one-act plays, "The Lion in Winter," "The Matchmaker," and the thriller "Deathtrap." "Patrons are urged to purchase season tickets," R. Scott Phillips, theater promotions coordinator said, "not only for a substantial savings over regular box office prices, but to reserve first-rate seats for upcoming productions." Curtain for all shows is at 8 p.m., Phillips said, with the box office staying open from 1 p.m. until curtain on days of performances. Season passes are $15.50 for adults or two for $25. Passes for senior citizens are $13.50 or two for $20. SUSC students with activity cards will be admitted free to all campus-community productions. "Patrons can buy passes from drama club students as they canvass Cedar City this month or at the box office which is located in the auditorium foyer," Phillips said. "Season passes will be available through Nov. 20, the final performance date for 'Midsummer Night's Dream'." Regular admisison prices for the season are $4 for adults, $3 for senior citizens and high school students, with children 5-12 admitted for $2. "Compare the price of a season ticket, $15.50, with single admission prices, $24, and you'll see what a bargain season passes are," Phillips said. "For $25 you can buy two passes, an even more substantial savings over the $48 you'd have to pay for two persons on the single admission basis." The 1982-83 season is as follows : "A Midsummer Night's Dream," November 12-13, 18-20; probably Shakespeare's best-known comedy and next to "Romeo and Juliet" probably the most produced. Directed by Fred. C. Adams, associate professor of theater arts at SUSC, "Midsummer Night's Dream" was last presented as a campus-community campus-community production in 1964. It has been selected three times for inclusion intheUtah Shakespearean Festival "The Lion in Winter," Win-ter," an arena theater production directed by R. Scott Phillips. Production dates are Jan. 12-15 for the serious comedy which was made famous in a movie version ver-sion by Kathryn Hepburn and Peter O'Toole. "The Matchmaker," written by Thornton Wilder, a classic comedy and the basis for the popular movie "Hello Dolly." The main stage production will be directed by new SUSC faculty member Douglas Baker, a "professional actor and vocal training instructor for the SUSC theater arts program. Production dates are Feb. 11-12, 17-19. -"Deathtrap," a brand new thriller written by Ira Levin that has been made into a successful movie starring Christopher Reeves and Michael Caine. Directed by Gary M. Mclntyre, chairman of the SUSC Theater Department, the arena theater production is scheduled for April 15-16, 15-16, 20-23. "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," a main-stage musical extravaganza directed by Fred. C. Adams. Production dates are May 13-14, 19-21 for the musical that ran on Broadway for over two years. "Sweeney Todd" is being billed, Phillips said, as the single largest endeavor ever undertaken un-dertaken by the SUSC Theater Deprtment. "An evening of One-Acts," One-Acts," three of the best student-directed plays from Theater Arts 490, Directing II. Staged as an arena production. |
