Show One of a kind Folk ballet to perform in Cedar City CEDAR CITY - The American Folk Ballet, the only ballet company in the world created directly from the folklore and folk history of America, will perform Oct. 12 in Cedar City, two days after a performance at Pepperdine University in Malibu, Calif. Sponsored by Cedar City Music Arts and Southern Utah State College, curtain is at 8 p.m. in the SUSC Auditorium. "We're thrilled to have the American Folk Ballet in Cedar City once again," Evelyn Petersen, music arts publicity coordinator, said. "Ever since the company performed for the inauguration of SUSC President Gerald R. Sherratt last spring, there's been talk of nothing else. Our only fear is that there won't be enough seating for the audience." The American Folk Ballet, Burch Mann -artistic director and choreographer takes audiences back into America's past, touching on the mountain people, the descendents of Scotch and Irish folk, the people of the prairies, the birth of jazz and the blues all flowing together with a combination of narration and music and a unique form' of vibrant, if & energetic dance. The company repertory includes such titles as . "Mule Train," "Moon of the Falling Leaves," "They Followed the Wilderness," "Daughters of Michael Dongarven," "Sunday Morning on Deep Creek,' "Memories of Scotia" and "Party at Stud Odum's Place." Each has been carefully choreographed to capture the spirit and the determination of the men and women who set out to settle America between 1800 and 1900. Artistic and educational headquarters for the company are at SUSC with corporate and booking headquarters in LosAngeles. Mann joined the SUSC faculty in Septenber as Distinguished Arjist in Residence. xSan Christoper, assistant-choreographer, assistant-choreographer, and Gwen Grimes, dancer and rehearsal coach, are also members of the SUSC faculty, a move made possible by a long-term long-term grant from the Kathryn C. Parsons Endowment of Pasadena, Calif. A public reception will be conducted following the SUSC performance in the lounge just west of the auditorium. "The public will have an opportunity to meet Burch Mann and the dance company," Petersen said, "and to look over the new dance lab that has been installed in-stalled in the auditorium complex to accommodate SUSC's rapidly growing dance department." Tickets to the Tuesday evening performance are $5. Admission is also included in the price of season tickets, $15, which covers admission to five other Music Arts programs, the next, the Utah Symphony on Nov. 9. SUSC students and students in Iron County schools are admitted free. The American Folk .Ballet has made eleven national tours and three international tours since it's establishment in 1962. The company represented the City of Los Angeles for the inauguration of President Jimmy Carter in 1977. A tour along the Wasatch Front has been scheduled for early November.
