The frosh team defeated Parowan 16-0, for J their first victory of the season. I Frosh, Sophs victorious For the first time this year, both Cedar High's freshman and sophomore football teams have put together wins in the same week. Parowan's JVs fell victim to the freshmen 16-0, 16-0, while the sophomores edged Springville's sophomores 7-0. Little Gary Mackelprang and Greg Bulloch led the way for the freshmen. Mackelprang ran another of his now-patented reverses, again for some 35 yards, but this one also for a TD. The score came with about four minutes left in the first quarter. The young Reds then added a two-point conversion to make it 8-0. That margin was stretched to 16-0 with a second quarter dash, also of 35 yards, by quarterback quar-terback Craig Cardon. TheTD came on a broken play, with Cardon sprinting out to pass, then cutting back toward the middle with the run. The frosh had other opportunities to score. One pass was dropped in the end zone. Another was caught just out of the end zone. Two scores were called back because of penalties. "Overall, we played fairly well, but not as well as in our loss to Hurricane," said freshmen fresh-men coach Benny O'Neal. "We had several more opportunities to score, and just didn't capitalize on them." The Redmen dominated the game on the ground, piling up 217 yards. They added just 27 yards passing. Offensively, Bulloch ran for 87 yards. Quarterback Quar-terback Cardon added 63 more, while Mackelprang had 48 on just two carries. O'Neal also felt ends Mark Drawe and Steve Pickett, and guards Marvin Melling and Clay Heybourne played well on offense. Defensively, O'Neal singled out the play of Bulloch, Derek Bohne, Bruce Briggs and Dan Esplin. The freshmen, now 1-4, face Lincoln County (Nev.) this evening at 7 p.m. in their final game of the year. Said O'Neal of this game: "I don't have the foggiest idea of what to expect. I have a feeling they'll be between Parowan and Hurricane or Beaver in toughness." The freshmen, like their varsity comrades, used a tough defense to stop Springville. "I felt just super about our defense," said coach Kim Matheson. "We shut them down really well on the run, and allowed just a few completed passes." The Cedar sophs got the only score they needed on a first-quarter 20-yard run around end by tailback Troy Nielsen. The extra point made it 7-0. 7-0. It was all defense from there on. Springville threatened just once, and that came, much like the varsity game, on the final play of a half. A Springville receiver got behind the Cedar secondary, caught a long pass, and raced to the one-yard line before being driven out of bounds by a Cedar player. The half then ended. Cedar had two other good opportunities to score. Late in the second quarter, a Cedar runner was hit just before running in for a score, and fumbled the ball into the end zone, where it was recovered by Springville for a touch-back. touch-back. In the third period, the sophs penetrated the Red Devil's 10-yard line before penalties put a stop to the drive. Like O'Neal, Matheson wasn't completely happy with his team's play, though the defense drew nothing but praise from the coach.."The offense just didn't click much of the time, and we had over 100 yards in penalities whistled onius." Players of the game, as selected by the team, were Nielsen on offense and end David Christensen on defense. Others Matheson mentioned as playing well were center David Benson and fullback Ben Whitney on offense, and end Layne Reeves and tackle Darren Green on defense. The sophs close their season this afternoon in Cedar City against the Payson sophomore team. "All I can say is that I expect another tough game," said Matheson. "But I think the kids will be up for their last game, and I think they can beat Payson." The sophs will be aiming to even their season record at 4-4 with a win over Payson. "If they could get to .500, they'll feel real happy about their season." |
