Show The ongoing devotion of the media to full coverage of events, both national and local, appears to me to have resulted in the creation of a fourth party in our governmental system of checks and balances: the executive, legislative, judicial and media. It is a healthy system and should continue with the utonomy and independence that have theretofore characterized their functioning. . Your editorial puts the matter in clear perspective: the first amendment right of the media to inform the public, must, at times be modified in the interest in-terest of ultimate justice, just as the discretionary right of a court to inhibit publication, upon occasion, may only be invoked by the needs of that same ultimate justice. Editor: Your recent editorial commenting favorably on my order restricting the media from publishing certain limited aspects of testimony in the Taysom case was appreciated by me. The appreciation derives not from any personal feeling of vindication of my act, but from the very healthy |
