Show Comm. gets blame for economic woes A Democratic candidate can-didate for the Iron County Commission Monday blamed Iron County's poor economic showing in recent Southwest Utah District construction reports on short-sighted policies of the commission. com-mission. "The Iron County Commission for years has been penny-wise and pound foolish," Loraine juvelin said. Mrs. Juvelin is running against Commission Chairman James L. Clark in the race to fill the unexpired term created by the death last summer of Commission Chairman H. Grant Seaman. In the report, released on a quarterly basis by Job Service, Iron County was shown to be lagging behind the Southwest District averages in both construction and gross taxable sales. The five counties in the district are Beaver, Garfield,. Iron, Kane and Washington. The report revealed the number of construction permits issued from April to June in Iron County was down 33.2 percent from the same period in 1979. The overall drop for the five counties was 23.8 percent. "Only in Cedar City (in Iron County), where there was a 0.8 percent increase, was there any J increase in the number of permits issued in Iron County," she said. "While we realize there has been a 'general economic downturn ; nationwide, Iron County's poor showing in relation to the other counties in the five-county area substantiates for me that Iron County is not aggressively moving to attract more industry and expand the tax base. That kind of activity is essential if we are going to make any strides in our goal of creating more jobs so that our young people will be able to stay in the area," she said. |
