Show SUSC to host X-country meet Several of the area's top collegiate cross country runners will compete in the Southern Utah State College Invitational In-vitational Friday at 4 p.m. on the Painted Hills Golf Course. Runners from Northern Arizona University, University of Utah, BYU, Weber State, Utah State ' University, and SUSC will be competing. "We will be seeing probably the best cross country competition ever to run in Cedar City," Boyd Adams, SUSC coach and meet director, indicates. Weber State, Northern Arizona, and Brigham Young will be team favorites in the meet, according to Adams. "Individually, there are a number of exceptional ex-ceptional runners," Adams says. Among those expected to be battling for first place will be Fred Mullenbach, NAU; Noberto Segura and Doug Friedli, Weber State; Tony Anderson, USU; and Keenan Hart, SUSC. BYU's Doug Padilla is the only runner from a Utah college or univeristy to defeat Hart this season, but there is some question whether Padilla will compete this week. Last week in the University of Utah Invitational, Padilla nipped Hart by 3.3 seconds over a five-mile course. The BYU runner finished second behind Olympic qualifier Jerald Jones of the Santa Monica Track Club. Hart was fourth just behind another Olympian, Richie Harris, a graduate student at Colorado State University. "After this weekend, we have only one more meet before the very important Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships. cham-pionships. We will be looking carefully at how our other runners are doing," Adams says. "So far, we are pleased with the progress of Richard Adams and Dale Cable. Adams is really starting to imprve his times, and Cable is coming well for a freshman runner." Adams, a sophomore from Cedar City, finished 24th in the 58-runner field at Salt Lake City. Cable, a graduate of Bingham High, was 41st across the finish line. As a team, SUSC finished fifth among the five teams competing. Weber State won the meet with 29 points. Following in order were BYU, 51; USU, 79; Utah, 88; and SUSC 116. Keenan Hart |
