Show Seen and Heard 'Round the Town By EDGAR Basketball Sidelights It's too bad that Hurricane had to lose that game to Cedar. They were out in front and would have been pretty certain of taking the league bunting if they could have won . . . .Enterprise showed that the pre-season dope was right, when they took the Flyers to the cleaners the other night. Evidently Coach Snyder's boys were hotter than hot that night. It's too bad they had to lose to Parowan Monday night. Well, anyway, it is now an open race with anything liable to happen. hap-pen. . . . Coach Stan Watts' boys played a beautiful floor game against Mesa. Pitchforth came up with the best ball that he has shown this year. He was so fast the Mesa boys couldn't keep in sight, let alone, keep up with him. The Dixie team has shown steady improvement and if they keep up the pace they played in the games last week, they ' are going to be mighty hard to beat out of the championship. The games this week end with B. A. C. should be beanereanos. . . . That double victory of Dixie's certainly fooled a lot of the boys . . . most of the northern scribes looked for a double loss for Dixie and most of us here would have settled for one victory out of the two, before be-fore the games. . . . George Snow has established himself with Dixie fans as a mighty good referee. ref-eree. When he calls them the fans and players take his decisions decis-ions without a yelp. George is well-known throughout the state for his ability as a whistle tooter. A Booster-Up-er Lawrence Wadsworth is in re-cepit re-cepit of a letter from Ora Bundy, director of water development in the State of Utah, informing him that he has been appointed by Governor Maw as a director on this board. This appointment comes in recognition of the outstanding out-standing civic work that Lawrence Lawr-ence has done in Dixie. It should place him in a position to help this section of the state materially in one of its most vital needs. Lawrence has also received recognition rec-ognition from C. N. Woods, regional reg-ional forester, for his work as president of the Washington County Coun-ty Wild Life Federation. Mr. Woods stresses the need for cooperation co-operation in our Democracy today as a social and economic necessity neces-sity and praises the county organization org-anization for the way it has cooperated co-operated to help solve game problems. prob-lems. Congratulations Lawrence. Tourist Business H. J. Plumhof, board member of the state department of publicity pub-licity and industrial development, writes to congratulate me on the editorial in the News regarding the need for a survey being made of our area to determine if there is anything that we can do to alleviate some of the distress that we will feel do to war-time conditions. con-ditions. Mr. Plumhof offers encouragement en-couragement regarding the tourist business. He declares that from studies the commission has made and from information available to them from the National Government, Gov-ernment, they do not believe that the tourist travel will drop as materially ma-terially as I had indicated in the editorial. He points out that in other warring nations that they have found out that the workers must be permitted recreation in order to keep their health and spirits up, and that for this reason rea-son his board anticipates that tourist travel will be permitted. Especially does he think this will be the case with neighboring states. For this reason he stresses the need to do everything possible pos-sible to "push" our scenic attractions attrac-tions in the areas from which there is hope that we will have travel. When one considers the great amount of civic work that Lee Owens does, it seems too bad that a position couldn't be found for him in the city power set-up. If the city fathers haven't already completed their appointments, I hope that they have or will give, Lee consideration m tms matter. Of course, it is possible that Lee isn't interested. He hasn't said anything to me about it other than to indicate that unless he is able to secure more work here he will have to move to one of the industrial areas. If this happens, St. George will lose one of its best civic workers. Motorists report loose stock on the highway near the tunnel. It will be a good thing when the fence is completed to help eliminate elim-inate this dangerous highway hazard. haz-ard. In the meantime stockmen should make every effort to keep their stock off this busy highway, so that we will not have another serious accident. |
