Show Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Evans Woodbury Celebrates Her 80th Birthday Monday Celebrating her SOth birthday anniversary an-niversary in this city Monday. Feb. 2nd, was Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Eliza-beth Evans (Polly) -Woodbury, widow of John Taylor Woodbury, prominent church and civic leader for many years. Many friends extended ex-tended greetings by phone during the day and others called to express ex-press birthday anniversary wishes. Monday evening. Mrs. Woodbury was honored at an informal dinner and social given by her daughter- in-law, Mrs. David O. Woodbury, at her home on First East and Highway 91. The dozen intimate friends and relatives devoted the afternoon to visiting and remin- iscing. Born in Rowington, Warwickshire, Warwick-shire, England, Mrs. Woodbury . was six weeks old when her parents par-ents left for America. Her parents. par-ents. Thomas and Matilda Commander Com-mander Evans were early L. D. S. converts, her father having served as excise officer in the British government. Returning to England Eng-land on busines he died at Philadelphia Phila-delphia on his way back to join his family in Utah. Mrs. Woodbury with her mother and one sister made their home in Bountiful until Polly was aged 10, when her mother married William Wil-liam Thompson and moved to Salt Lake City, with her two daughters, daugh-ters, whom Mr. Thompson adopted. adop-ted. Here Polly became acquainted acquaint-ed with John Taylor Woodbury whom she married in the St. George Temple, Oct. 19, 1883. Later they returned to St. George to reside. Eight of their nine children are living, including John T. Woodbury Wood-bury Jr., David O. Woodbury and Matilda W. Ruesch ,all of St. George; Dr. Angus M. Woodbury of Salt Lake City; Wm. W. Woodbury Wood-bury of Hurricane; Mrs. LeRoy Hafen of Denver, Colo.; Mrs. W. W. Bryson, Oakland, Calif.; and Mrs. Willard D. Ellis, of Berkeley Calif. Also 39 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. |
