Show American Legion Holds District Meet Here Friday Members Attending Report An Unusually Fine Program and Large Crowd On Friday, Oct. 11, St. George was honored with the district convention of the American Legion Leg-ion and Legion Auxiliary. The i occasion was distinctive also in I the fact that both district presidents, presi-dents, Henry Pickett of 'the Legion Leg-ion and Madge M. Cannon of the Auxiliary, as well as one state official, of-ficial, Alice W. Milne, who is vice president, are of this city. Meetings Meet-ings were held in the South ward chapel with separate sessions for the men and women at 2 p. m., and a joint session at 4 p. m. Official visitors included Department De-partment Commander Clem ! Schramm of Ogden, vice com-; com-; mander Howard Johns, Fillmore, Department Adjutant Art Hors-ley, Hors-ley, and District Chaplain W. 'Worthen of Delta; with Lavina ;R. Formal presentation presenta-tion of the colors, singing of America, Am-erica, prayer by the chaplain, Julia Graff, in the Auxiliary meeting, preceded the introduction introduc-tion of visitors and the reports of department officials and from the various posts in attendance. District 7 includes Beaver, Fillmore, Fill-more, Milford, Parowan, Cedar, Kanab, and all of Washington county. District Commander Henry Pickett presided at the joint session ses-sion at 4 p. m., in the assembly hall, where a short but "snappy" program was provided. Addresses were made by the official visitors, with Mrs. Bundy and Commander Clem Schramm as special speakers. speak-ers. At both the separate and this joint sessions reports were made of the recent National conference con-ference held in Boston, and Commander Com-mander Schramm highlighted his afternoon address with reading of major points from the carefully worked out resolutions compiling the voice of the Legion at that conference. I n conclusion h e pledged the strength of the more than one million Legionaires and their families to support and uphold up-hold the principles of Liberty and if need be to make ultimate sacrifice sac-rifice as many made in the World War for the principles of freedom. They did not hesitate to label foreign policies and individuals for the destruction of peace, life, property and treasures of history that are going on today under merciless 'dictatorship and urged people to teach patriotism in its rmrity to their children and stand j by the flag. I Pipe organ music was provided by Mae A. Pace and Mamie Pax-man Pax-man conducted the singing. There were also vocal solos by Mrs. Paxman and by Clive Hartman, the latter a promising young vocalist vo-calist of the Dixie junior college. Banquet At Night In the evening nearly 150 Legionnaires, Leg-ionnaires, Auxiliary members and guests assembled at the Arrowhead Arrow-head hotel for a banquet and dance. Tables were decorated with bowls of Dixie roses which were praised by the visitors. Commander Pickett presided and Gordon Mathis was toastmaster. Vocal numbers were supplied under und-er direction of Mae A. Pace and included by Melba Baker, Alice Cannon and Mary Lou Wells and solos by Clive Hartman both of whom responded with encores. Mrs. Pace also led in community singing. Brief speeches and toasts with Department Commander Schramm, and Adjutant Art Horsley, and former Mayor Albert Al-bert E. Miller and Auxiliary Commander Com-mander Mrs. Ora Bundy responding. respond-ing. During the afternoon between sessions and the evening banquet, all visitors to the city were taken on a tour of St. George with Albert Al-bert E. Miller as guide. Many interesting in-teresting comments were made as to this particular feature of the day's entertainment. |
