Show UINTAH HISTORICAL SOCIETY The monthly meeting of the Uintah Historical Society will be held at the Golden Age Center at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13. The program will be given by Carl Sowards and Mrs. Ruth Sowards, wife of the late Lee Sowards, on the early history of Ashley Valley, particularly that of their pioneer ancestor, William Gibson. Mr. Gibson was born in Scotland in 1845 and came to America, moving to Ashley Valley in 1877 with his wife whom he married in Salt Lake Valley. Their daughter married N. G. Sowards and these two families were prominent in the settlement of Ashley Ward. Mr. Gibson also served as state representative. being elected in 1895 to the first Utah Legislature. He died in 1932 and was buried in the vault he had constructed in the family plot. Thirty-seven Thirty-seven years later these graves had to be moved to give way to progress as they were in the way of the Steinaker Dam which was built in that area, spanning the Steinaker Draw. All members and anyone interested is invited in-vited to attend. The Sowards have information, informa-tion, pictures and early-day early-day memorabilia to present pre-sent to the group |
